Hired Help?

You can't see her. But there is my 'hired' part time farm hand. Her name is Molly and she has spent the last 3 years working and training in show barns along with a second job. She has partially completed her Equine Management Degree and I am going to push her to finish it.

I taught her to ride in 2018 and she IS a natural.

[She has a tough backround which I won't go into. But she has a natural ability with animals. She has worked and been on her own for 3 years.  The price of renting an apartment got to be too expensive so she moved back home to get on her feet. LUCKY for me!]

With the extra care it takes me right now to help out hubby, I have not been able to keep up with grooming and working with my fabulous mules.

Molly has extensive knowledge of each mule and the horse we have. I offered her a part time job-ish to come out and groom them, clean the goat pen, help fence, exercise Sunshine and Siera along with other jobs like worming and clipping. All things I can do, but easier with a second hand to get it done.

She also will work with Sundance to see if we can't finish her off with getting steady under saddle. This she wants to do on her own. She also sees the horse as a good challenge to test her training skills. I'm all good with that.

A real upside to this?

Hubby sits right up and becomes sociable when Molly arrives. Yesterday HE came outside and did some work with the skid steer while Molly helped me with a fencing job. BONUS!

We put up a temporary paddock. I do this one each summer to lessen the mowing. It generally takes me all day to unravel the wire and set things up. It took less than two hours with Molly.

I've always felt like I wasn't doing my equine justice the last two years. Is it worth paying someone to help so I can garden, care for hubby, and reap the benefits?

Is it worth it? Yes.

To see my husband perk up ... to see my animals groomed and slick? To see the equine given the attention they deserve? Oh, heck yes!

Oh yes. One more bonus. I have someone I can go riding with!

When she gets her full time job, it will be less hours but right now, the extra hand IS fantabulous.

Molly on Siera Monday night. The two of them were getting reacquainted.

Will this be permanent? No. Molly will do as Molly does and she will move on again once she is back on top of her boots.

It is working for right now and that what I can ask for and it is a good thing.

Meanwhile

 ~~~~~
Who ordered snow and rain stuff? April showers/snow squalls bring May flowers.
Mother Nature has her own mind. However the moisture is welcomed.
Yesterday was one of those days of rain then fog, then mist, then rain and then winds. I started to clean up the upstairs rooms and got totally sidetracked.
I came downstairs with an old wooden box. This old wood box used to be some sort of box for apples that were shipped from a company called Yakima Valley.
The box after so many years looks like this:
The original label would look like this:
I inherited this wooden box from my Aunt's house, it was filled with rolls of fabric that I intended to crochet into a rag rug.
I repurposed it for my hand me down toys and figures. Basically it is a Toy Box. What on earth am I doing with toys?
I thought it would be a fun day to try some more photography using my laptop monitor to make a suitable backround. Last year I fretted about getting one of those fancy little tabletop backround sets that click together and provide you with a beautiful backround for still life photography.
Ouch. The prices range from $79 to $99 just for the boards. I got some craft paper last year and taped it to some wooden boards and set it on the old trunk. It works well enough for tiny things but not for larger items.
I thought I'd look in the toy box and see what I could do. Surely it would only distract me for a few minutes from the pressing chores of cleaning out 'stuff' from the bedroom upstairs.
First I set things up on the old trunk and messed around with different arrangements.
I intended to remove the white backround and replace it with some sort of cosmic scene. That was a failure. tea cups, monsters, Jack Daniels, and space dudes. I found it rather amusing. I love mixing up the characters from different genres.
I moved to the laptop and set up a Predator on a box. He kept falling down
It became a game of being able to make him stand on his own and balance. Here is the original shot:
He is standing on the box he came in. The day was overcast so the light coming in from the window highlighted his face.
I edited it to this:
I did a closer shot here in a slightly different pose.
The picture on the laptop is a fractal I created in Mandelbulb 3D.
I did a couple of more figures. Storm Trooper:
Mandalorian. I just looked this guy up and I guess I should watch the show on Disney+.  I'm not perfectly happy with this shot, but that is the fun of being able to create a scene rather easily.
How it is done.
Get a box an set your character next to the screen then simply shoot a closeup and be aware of your light and shadows.
And finally I got the room picked up and tidied. But on the way, I ended up taking something to the bathroom and remembered to pick up something from the living room and then thought I should vacuum, and ... Charlie's blanket needed washing...
and then....
well, you get it.
Sometimes I can be so scattered. I tell my husband it is the result of a creative mind.
Setting goals and boundaries
Sometimes just a change in pace and setting up goals are what could be needed for changing a person's outlook. My outlook.
Tai Chi is another tool to use. Rich and I did it together for a while to assist with his depression and PTSD. He felt relaxed and in a better place after we did a 30 minute lesson together. It was put on by the VA mental health folks in Madison. We had received a video to practice with at home. It fell by the wayside of course.
However, I transferred the mindfulness relaxation exercise to my computer files so I could bring it up later.
I'd forgotten all about it until another blogger mentioned Tai Chi.
I was not brought up to be open to things like Yoga/Pilates/Tai Chi. Hard work was our exercise and tension release.
Now I'm a bit more open to other ideas. Why not? After 3 days of Beginner's Yoga and giving myself a mindfulness break, I am feeling quite chilled out.
I set boundaries for us too. My hikes will be on Thursdays weather permitting. I messaged my hiking pal with that info too. I'm not going to constantly rearrange my hike times for his schedule. [This was a helpful tip from my son]
I felt stuck in a rut like a little gerbil on a caged wheel. Perhaps these things will help. I don't feel so stuck right now. Not much has changed other than an attitude adjustment and of course making some goals.
Today's events include a hike at KVR. I'll be doing a quiet relaxing hike with Charlie while exploring a new trail. Well, a new trail to us.
Plan B
My neighbor and friend Bill planned on working out at the Wellness Center this morning. He was not aware that they had closed the gym with no plans at this time of reopening....well, until I texted him early this morning.
He just texted back:
He said "I need to go to plan B. Wait, I don't have a plan B."
I texted him back and said, "Home workouts, raking, bicycle, light jogging, fresh air, creative ways to do upper body weights..."
Next text: Can we do a really hard hike this week?
My answer: Sure. I have a 3 mile killer hike. We can start at my driveway and it will take us through two valleys.
I'll be looking up workouts to keep up my current upper body strength.
Next text from Bill: Will I get hurt on your hard hike?
My answer: Of course not! Hard in the way that there are two valleys and lots of steep hills but the trails are good and I've taken kids on them.
I thought that was funny sort of. If he wanted a hard fast hike, I'd give it to him for the leg burn.
There is plenty of space for us to hike and stay separate. However that may come to a swift end soon if positives are found in the county.
But anyway.
Plan B for exercise? Well I am still working on Plan A for staying home.
I have one more errand tomorrow and that is to pick up the taxes.
I dropped into Walmart [eeks !] to grab some coffee.
I needed some seeds also.
The garden and hardware sections were void of people. The food isles were full of people. NO toilet paper, no napkins, no paper towels, and two boxes of Kleenex were left.
I told Rich we were going to go back to cloth for napkins and wiping up messes.
I'm all done in for right now. The Patient Advocate for the VA says she is getting the run around on the claim I've been trying to work on for 18 months. She told me to call the White House Hot Line. Um. Okay?
Bam.
The oncologist we were going to see tomorrow called. He asked to be on speaker phone so he could talk with the both of us.
[I moved that appointment assuming it was just a 15 minute consult and congrats on being clean for almost 5 years]
Um. No. He wanted a Nuclear Medicine Bone Scan. Rich's CT scan from last month showed 'something' a bit out of the ordinary. Then he mentioned the C word and my heart stopped. He went on to downplay it but to tell us he was scheduling a scan as soon as he could.
He said not to be concerned over this, it was probably nothing, but if it was cancer it might just be prostrate or bone or...well, when we saw the Urologist we could be better informed for .... options.
[Did he say that? I don't know, somehow my brain sort of had a disconnect when he said cancer.]
I thought NO.
No...no no.
He then assured us that this was normal operating procedure and he'd put the consult in right away for the bone scan.
He hung up after wishing us a nice day.
Hey, this guy is nice...but hmm.
Rich was unconcerned. He shrugged and then patted my hand and told me not to worry. He smiled and said "But of course you will! YOU won't sleep for weeks now!"
He turned back to his Western and pushed play.
Plan A & B had just changed.
Hey. Why not address Pandemics and Cancer all in the same day, right?
We will see what happens.
I need a Plan C.
DIY fall wall hanging
I saw something on YouTube that was suggested by another person and I browsed some DIY decoration ideas.
I found one that was perfect for a rainy day and since I had all of the materials, I thought I'd try it myself.
Note...I am NOT a painter. I am not really an expert at all, so here was my 'go' at the project.
It would have looked better if I'd had a stick or stencil to make the 'pot' for the flowers.
So
I made a brown backround. And blue looking sky.
 Then my not so great attempt at making a pot for my fall flowers.
So I added some color just because...
So now that I am feeling like an awkward kid again, I decided to go to the next step. Really, I was going to toss this out but decided to follow it through.
Cut an opening in the canvas. This is a framed canvas so it worked for this project.
Stick flowers into the cut and arrange.
Hang on the wall and move the flowers around.
I forgot to show the step where you hot glue the stems on the back of the canvas...
When it is surrounded by other photos and a wreath, it actually looks pretty decent on the wall and really adds some 'fall' color.
I was going to toss it, but it grew a bit on me. And I'm thinking of how to decoupage some fall leaves on a canvas and do the same sort of thing with a Christmas and Thanksgiving theme. Sort of adds dimension to a wall hanging.
Um...what I saw and what I wanted to do are far different...here is a shot of one done expertly.
And...I can't find the link to the DIY video I watched but you can figure this out yourself.
I like mine mainly because I did it. Now to have some fun with some more ideas when November comes around and it is just plain icky and dull outside.
I may even try something different tomorrow as it is supposed to rain buckets and we have up to 3" of rain forecast.
Sigh.
We do not need it.
If it spits outside, it will flash flood.
Weed Eater Adventure
I have always shied away from the Weed Eater Machine. It is noisy, it flings grass bits everywhere, and it just is plain intimidating! Plus it uses gas, is smelly, and works with this string thingy that hits weeds and flings them everywhere.
That is...
Until I watched my son Ed use one last year. I was amazed at how quickly he cleared areas under the electric fence.
Grass and weeds flew. And he made it look easy.
[Oh yes, he did sweat profusely and get green bits of 'stuff' all over himself.]
Here is a shot of him working last year when he helped me replace and re-fence an area.
However I decided then and there that I would conquer the fear of the WEED Eater!
Well, I would figure out how to get my hands on one and use it anyway. Certainly it was easier at cutting weeds than using the corn knife as I'd done for so many years.
I could get weeds blasted into oblivion in minutes versus hours, right?
Modern technology is good right?
Normally we don't have many weeds or grass impeding the fence, except when that pasture is out of rotation for a while. This summer we've had an abundant weed/grass issue. June, July, and August have been rainy months.
Normally we have a very dry July or August, but not this year. We can mow the yard and it seems we have to do it again only a few days later or suffer the shaggy yard syndrome.
[Well, we have suffered that, seems this year it has been especially hard to keep up with the yard work while all of the remodeling has been going on.]
I asked my husband this spring for a Weed Eater for my birthday. He was surprised and picked out a Weed Eating thing that he liked. He said he could use it if I didn't.
I also got a face shield and ear protection. I cannot stand the thought of weed and grass bits hitting my face.
I've used the Machine a few times, but tonight I got after a rather large area that is impossible to mow. And dang it all, it just looked shabby near our nice new looking house.
I'm really not that great at using the weed whacker, but practice makes perfect.
Hubby stopped me and took the machine away then proceeded to demonstrate the proper method of weed whacking.
The perfect angle, the perfect pitch, how to angle the head and slowly sweep back and forth while watching the grass and stuff...get chopped up.
I tapped my boot and put my hands on my hips.
I flipped my mesh face shield down and made a 'Gimme' sign with my gloved hands.
I explained that I needed to practice. I needed to use it to get comfortable with it.
He demonstrated a bit more and when I started jumping up and down and flapping my arms...he finally got the idea.
...and let me loose with the grass/weed munching machine.
I didn't do a perfect job but I annihilated the weeds near the big shed and around Lil' Richard's Winter paddock. I was happy for the face shield as I even found smeared slimy slug parts on it.
I finished up after about 45 minutes. My arms are not used to holding a weed monster.
And then I looked down at myself.
I was covered head to toe with grass/weed parts. I even had green stuff in my hair. My neck and shirt were plastered with it.
Note to self. Keep the same old crummy pants and shirt for weed eating. Also swap the newer glasses for the older glasses.
I am less concerned about the flying bug smeary parts that get through the mesh with my old glasses.
I looked over the job I had done after putting the Wonderful Birthday Gift away in the shed.
Hubby looked at the job. He didn't say anything negative so I take that as evidence that I did 'okay'.
He mentioned that he'd have to get out his commercial weed eater to get the really tough stuff. He could put a blade on it and it would cut through small woody weeds.
He did mention at the time we were getting this machine for me that he would not get me a blade. I was simply too dangerous. The string trimming would have to suit me.
Tomorrow? That pasture fence line that has been annoying me with a growth spurt of weeds.
Be Still Week One
I did something I didn't think I'd ever do at all...
Take a photography course.
Something about Kim Klassen's work has always had me intrigued.  I have followed her blog for quite some time now.  She used to make textures and I used to admire her beautiful still life work and the textures she used.
So, I signed up for a class.  Be Still 52.
And yes I am going to work at it.  Still Life has never been anything that interested me so I figured, why not?
Why not reach out of my photography comfort zone and ... do something different?
And so I begin.
Be Still And Be...
or with the words added...not sure if I like the words added.
I picked this shot today because of what we are going through and have gone through in the past year.
Everything was put on hold last year due to Rich's diagnosis with Throat Cancer and we are now forging through with a house remodel.
Patience is something I am learning.  I am pulling wall paper with a vengeance and it is a messy awful job.
When the job is finished I imagine we'll have taken a sow's ear and made into something lovely.
I took a series of shots.  My makeshift studio included a white foam board, a south facing window, an old chair, an old white sheet, coffee cup, shredded wall paper, beads, chain, and of course the scraper.
The day was overcast so the light was very subdued and I tried to go for the high key sort of look.
The second shot I liked was with a carnation bud, a dried up amaryllis flower that I'd kept for some reason, the white sheet, cup and well, there it is.
I took time just looking and from my first week's lesson.
Breathing. Pausing. Relaxing.
I practiced a some Tai Chi and then got to work on this thing I was certain I could not pull off.
Old and New
I have one very similar to this shot that doesn't cut off the petals on the top of the flower.  I need to look it over a few more times to decide which of the three shots I like the best.
That is it for now.  I'm looking forward to working with this.
Be Still.
It is something I often do in the woods, to hear the nature around me and to appreciate the sounds of the forest.
Now I can practice this in a different sense.
