I'm going to just say this. Visiting Gay, Michigan was probably one of the most interesting places I've ever visited.
It is located in Keweenaw County.
The town has a beautiful playground now that seems to be cared for by the local residents.
We decided to go visit the ruins.
These miner figures were painted in various areas of the ruins. It reminded me that this area held ghosts and the history of immigrants coming to our country to work in harsh conditions and raise families.
What was it like, how difficult was it? I was so curious I read more history of the place.
I had to take a shot of Jer walking through the ruins for perspective. Yep, it looks a bit spooky, but that is how I wanted to portray it.
I'll go back here and there is another set of ruins that Jer says I just 'have to see'. I guess I was so fascinated by them.
And of course.
It was the perfect place to do some toy photography. Yep. I brought characters just for this place.
I won't put them all in here, but I had a fantastic series of shots.
....Oh.
And my son thoroughly got immersed in the process, we found out something we had in common.
Below.
I handed him the camera and to set up Homeless Joe and his Dog with a background of the wooden structures and alien looking landscape.
After several tries he ended up with this. I'm proud that he took me up on the challenge since he has never operated any other camera other than a cell phone.
I won't bore you with the series of photos we did while in the ruins. It was fun, creative, and so much fun for me.

I have no doubt that it was a very interesting visit. There was a time when “Gay” had a whole other meaning.
ReplyDeleteTo me gay means happy and nothing else.
DeleteSounds like a fab time! Your infared photos are inspired! And that little horned critter fit right in to the setting!
ReplyDeleteHe did, I took a series of shots there with him and with my other character Homeless Joe and his robot dog.
DeleteBeautiful pictures. I'm so glad you had a nice time with your son. I Googled Gay, as I wasn't familiar with it. It's in the UP and I'm only familiar with the thumb. But I've heard enough about the UP to be amazed that you weren't swarmed by flies this time of year. Glad you made it out alive.
ReplyDeleteThere were absolutely no insects.
DeleteI've seen and appreciated elsewhere some of these before, but not the family in the ruins iirc. I like it.
ReplyDeleteThis is quite the area! Do you know where the immigrants came from? The ruins do look spooky.
ReplyDeleteThe website about Gay says English, French Canadian, Finnish, German.
DeleteThe ruins were cool and I could have spent a long time looking at them as the light changed. I didn't have the time though.
Ruins and ghost towns intrigue me. I feel the people that were there.
ReplyDeleteThere are two... I think more sets of mining ruins I need to see, we missed the one I really wanted this time. Next time....
DeleteWhat sweet photos and fun!
ReplyDeleteIt was fun and very enjoyable.
DeleteThat looks like.a very cool place. I love old ruins.
