Fun Friday stuff

I ordered the Woodland Mushroom Botanicals for the new Lego release on June 1st. I figured it was a good birthday gift for myself. 

It seems that my Sprite minifigure was absolutely delighted to find the set when I opened it. This is an 'adult' set which means it is a bit complicated. I figured it would be great for when the weather got so hot and beastly humid out. I could spend some time relaxing inside and enjoying cooler temps in the house.

I have to say that it is a beautiful set for display...

and to pose minifigs in.

Sprite seems to think that this should be her new permanent home. I agree, she looks perfectly happy amongst all the amazing fungi.

I'm just going with some things that make me happy. This week was horrible with heat, humidity, and bad weather so I busied myself when I wasn't staring out the window or sweating while mowing the yard...

and I did some distracting play....

I really really needed the distractions.

I'm just going to toss some shots in here for fun with no real explanation. Yesterday was my indoor day because of the non stop storms that were occurring.

Let's talk weather for one second!

Or pretend it doesn't exist. Maybe I'll put up summer photos on my computer and have them scroll through so I can pretend it is summer.

The weather icon says it it 'Fair' outside. I think they mean that it is mostly clear. I'm not even going to talk wind chill.

The truth be told though, winter is partially my favorite season. 

No bugs. 

No lawn mowing. 

No weeds to contend with. 

No humidity.

Can't get naked to cool off on a hot day.
The wild animals might see me and die of fright.

But I do like all seasons...just mainly not bugs and humidity.

Chores went well on Saturday morning despite the temperatures. 

Charlie had another opinion. He'd gone out did his thing quickly and then settled in on the couch blankets with some of my gear.

But at -20F [-29C]? I'll wait until it comes up to zero to go out and enjoy hiking.

I find it interesting that Fahrenheit and Celsius get closer and closer as it gets colder. But that is not true either!

Absolute zero is weird too. 0 Kelvin, -273.15 C, and -459.67 F.  Supposedly that is zero point energy. 

I looked that stuff up because I was curious about cold and how cold could it ever be? Zero point energy would mean, I guess that nothing would be alive.

Yikes!

So in thinking about cold weather, I got out my Ice Planet Minifig and decided to do a portrait of her. Yes, it is a she! I love that Lego has both genders doing tough jobs. I'm going to call her Shelly. 

Apparently, she doesn't mind icy places as she lives [according to Lego] on a planet of ice and snow.

Looks like she has a Robot Penguin. I guess it will need a name also.

Lastly. I did do some experimental photography yesterday with my Lensbaby Sweet 50.

I was in the mood for pink. Well, that was the one color of dried flowers I had.

In the evening, I tried watching some mysteries on the Boob Tube. Nothing held my attention. Instead I turned on some music via YouTube and let it keep me company.

So I created my own murder mystery with the Film Noir Detective from Lego. I processed it as 'Film Noir' also because it just seemed fitting.

Now I have to garb up and go water my little pony. The gals are still eating the huge pile of hay I put out last evening.

We are already up to -10!

Little Distractions

We are still going through the process of end of life for my husband. 

However, I have so many quiet moments to do nothing in this stage. 

I'm not the sort of person who can simply sit and read all day. If it is sunny or nice out. I sit on the porch next to the window where Rich's bed is and well ~~ I let my mind wander and get creative to give my brain a rest from the stress.

Farmer Bob starts rounding up pumpkins for the fall harvest:

I was able to take my first walk in a week on Tuesday when Tammy came for Respite time. She has a special insight to being a Caregiver as she has worked in this field for 30 years. 8 months ago, she provided end of life care for her husband. 

She insisted that I take Charlie and GET out of the house. She insisted that I take my 'camera stuff' and go out away from the house. 

It felt a bit weird to walk out the door. Tammy promised to call or even honk her car's horn if there was a sudden change in anything. 

I stopped by the Highbush Cranberry Bush to see how the berries were proceeding.

I was mesmerized by studying the light and the berries themselves. I wanted to create/shoot something that would be stunning and memorable to me.

With a bit of camera trickery, using simple changes in position and exposures I managed to get two very different photos of this bunch of Highbush Cranberries. I used the centerfield split diopter filter for the above shot and a slight overexposure.

I took the filter off and changed my position and exposure to get this next shot of the same clump. I like this version best, it speaks of light/darkness/and glowing sunlight.

Accidently I did a shot while moving the camera. 

Then I decided to try an ICM shot. ICM stands for intentional camera movement. That means instead of being still while taking the shot, you move the camera. I had the funky filter on when I did it and loved the results.

The first one was very abstract, something I liked. But it didn't really show what I wanted.

Once more with adjusted settings. Now I can detect the trees and the colors.

Then I took a still photo and combined it with the ICM photo and this resulted.

For whatever reason, I enjoyed doing that. I did this freehand with no tripod as I rarely carry them.

I found some leaves turning red on a damaged wild plum tree from where the loggers had been knocking it about with their skidder or truck while loading logs. I used that funky centerfield split diopter lens once more. It produces a glow of color around the main subject which I'm enjoying at the moment.

I'm a curious photographer and will try many different things to produce an image. The plums from this tree were delicious, I gathered some each time I walked up the road last month and popped them out of their bitter skins into my mouth. The plums were the size of half dollar coins. 

After meeting with the Social Worker, Tammy sent me out again. I walked to a place where I'd take the neighbor kids to play. I found these rubbery somewhat posable robots I'd given them years ago wrapped in some low branches of trees. It was evident that squirrels or other critters had chewed on them.

I decided to bring them home to see if I could get creative with them.

As she left she handed me the toys we'd rinsed off. "I bet you can do something fun with them," she said.

Back out on the porch I went. I used a bit of toothpick magic to make them stand.

My Dancing Robots...

I wanted to be just like them and dance carelessly

in the succulent garden.

They showed me that there is happiness to be found 

and that I could smile at them.

They danced to their inner music with

so much joy.

And off they went hopping and twisting

dancing the day away.

Creating these little scenes while checking on hubby reminded me that there is still some joy in the world. [I haven't watched the news this week at all]

I'll keep these two around for moments of dancing, joy, and bliss.

These days we need something to smile about.

The Porch Guard:

And yes, he is feeling the stress and anxiety too. He is restless and cries often. He waits by the back door most mornings for Steve to show up now.

Or he lays on the couch so he can watch Rich.

Over the past 10 days there have been so many comings and goings. He also enjoys quiet time on the porch where he can just watch his domain from 'his' bench.

Photography and anything I can think up for a bit of creativity is what keeps me somewhat sane right now. The porch is an amazing sanctuary.

Fishing and photos....

 We had a perfect day ... to go fishing. 

With Steve's help, we made it to Lee Lake in Cazenovia once more. And...the fish actually were biting. It was only the little fish, but at least the guys had fun deciding which one was going to be the BIG one.

It was a great day to take my Infrared Camera and more than one light spectrum filter. Below are the two guys deep in conversation...or they are just sitting quietly enjoying each others company. These two do chat but have long silences in between.

Some conversations start with ... Do you remember when....???  I listen intently to those stories because it is a history of things that occurred before I met Rich.

To think these guys are in their late 70's ... and have known each other since they were in their late 20's. 

Their friendship never ended but their lives took different directions with the two of them connecting up every once in a while.

Below...Steve tied a table umbrella to the dock so Rich can stay cooler in the shade. He thinks of everything!

Infrared Photo...

Bassy the stuffy fish did come along! Rich said she couldn't stay on the dock with them. He was afraid that she'd blow off as we actually had a breeze.

Cell shot....

The cool thing about Infrared is that you can get so 
many different looks with one filter. This
bench was filmed in the spectrum of

550nm.

This first shot is what it looks like

in camera. Startling blue foliage

and an orange hued sky.
Red becomes pink.

This is the black and white version. Basically I just desaturated the shot

and upped the contrast a bit.

The shot below is achieved by

what is called Channel swapping.
IR only picks up a few colors.

This is very hard to explain and it

is pretty technical.

I know that I enjoy the results.

The world looks foreign.

I really had fun with the Infrared camera. Hot sunny days are the best for using this camera.

Below are shots I did with my upgraded but not very fancy Google Pixel 9a. My 6a was on its last legs. What did surprise me [aside from the price] was the new ability of the camera to take 'long' exposures. So I went and tried it out by the Caz Dam.

I've been fighting off using my cell phone as a camera for a long time. But I can see its uses while hiking a long distance and not lugging along heavy camera equipment.

I did some other experimenting with a clearfield center diopter filter I found at a second hand store for $1. It was the filter I used in the very first shot which allowed the center to be in focus and the edges become blurred.

I can see where it will be very very handy in some toy photography.

This is the Lady of Pain from the Dungeons and Dragons collection. I thought she'd go perfect with a poison dart frog.

We had more adventures after leaving the lake. 

Eventually we did make it home safe and sound and tired out. But Rich and I are looking forward to our adventure next week.

Some fun & Close...

 

I thought I'd have some fun on Sunday with my Lego Castle set.  I wanted to do more than just a few neat shots like the one below.

This is Clarence, he is one of the Castle Guards. 

After this shot, I thought it would be really fun to try a 'stop motion'. I did it the old fashioned way without an app to help. I guess there is an app you can install on your phone to do this and there is also and AI app called NaukNauk which will take a still video of a minifigure and make it into a short animated film.  It is slick as all get out. I feel like it is a cheap cheat, even though I've seen little videos that are pretty fun.

But it isn't true stop motion like I learned as a kid. I learned from the artists at my dad's office as they did animation. It was careful step by step drawing or using a photograph. I learned the old fashioned way.

I enjoyed this so much, it was quite a bit of fun.

In this castle there is a skeleton that has been locked in a cell. Obviously, the guards must have forgotten to feed him!

Looks like he is happy to have escaped!

After the last storm I had to go check for more downed trees. There was one. What a year for falling trees!

I of course had an idea for something fun to shoot while checking.

I used battery powered mini-lights and strung them out on a deer trail then placed my space people in the path and viola!

I didn't even think of a follow up to this shot...but I imagined the minifig in the orange saying to the other astronaut: See! I told you I saw strange lights!

I was just happy to quickly set things up and grab the shot and be on my way back home.

Though I did find these....

They were way passed their prime of course but I think they could have been some sort of Boletes. When they are fresh, they look rather beautiful.

There were more 'False Coral Mushrooms' popping up in one area of the forest that I had to backtrack through as the original ridge trail now has been blocked by fallen trees from the last few storms. No fence damage, but it is a pain to climb through or go around.

My Monday was a success. I called all the places I had to call and did all the boring things I had to do, then took some time to sit on the porch and watch the birds and think about the upcoming heat wave. This part of the summer is not my favorite.

By evening the air was breathless. However, I did still see lightening bugs! They must really love heat and humidity and ... still nights. I think my Grandmother used to describe weather like this as: Close.

Close: a weather condition when the relative humidity and the temperature are both the same. Often with no breeze where the air feels stagnant and heavy making it hard to breathe.

The A/C will get a work out for the next few days. It will be 'close'.

Sunday stuff

Sunday was a rest day, I had a ton of outdoor work to do, however, I decided that I was going to goof off and just do things that pleased me [aside from caring for hubby].

This just goes to show you that toy ... or Still Life photography can be done anywhere and any time. This is my bed that is in the living room. I got a piece of painted plywood that I've used for years as a top for my 'creative' table --which is now on the porch. The clean white surface is great for working with crafts or toys. 

In this case I needed a space that was solid enough to use to balance Legos.

There is my ex-cookie tray with my wood pieces. The challenge was to 'make' a scene that did not look like it was sitting on my bed.

This was the result.

I also took out my castle and had some fun with that. I did a little stop motion scene but that will have to wait until I have more goof off time to process that.

Below is my tiny entry way table that is my 'flower' stand. I filled my vases with an assortment of flowers and was surprised at how beautiful bouquets of Queen Anne's Lace are! This was Queen Anne's Lace and Hosta flowers that were leaning over the back stoop.

Of course my Dragons and dried mushrooms and flower petals keep my table interesting. To me it is just perfect.

And this is me just before bed. I thought I'd try a selfie hint I saw on the internet. I propped the camera on the coffee maker and put it on a timer. 

Olive gave me a haircut on the porch and I love it. It saved me time, worry, and expense of making an appointment in my 'allotted' me time.

The stuff behind me is our entryway. It is filled with oxygen containers and all of that crap you drop by the back door. 

I was sort of surprised by how I looked. It almost looks as if I am really sad and tired. I may be tired, but definitely not really sad. Maybe a bit worn out.

So there it is, a current photo of me that I won't faint at.

Here it is Monday and this is the day that I picked to do all of the things I hate the most. You know, balancing the checkbook, making phone calls and making lists of things I need to get done and things I don't want to do but must.

Oh, and the weekly grocery list. I really don't like shopping or preparing meals.
