Hot Weather and building stick houses

The weather for this Sunday is going to be very steamy and dangerously hot again through Monday.

I've scrubbed water tanks and refilled them along with making sure the mules and pony have access to good shade already along with an area where they can stand under trees and catch any breeze that might come through.

I'm bummed. I was hoping to go camping in our woods for the weekend.

I got all my work done by 10am yesterday and then worked in the gardens.

I decided to return to the stick house and see what I could come up with.

My helpers were all ready and raring to go.

The roofing is supposed to look haphazard and rough with bits of bark and moss.

The next part was to paint and decorate the cardboard it is on. I'll 'make' it into a diorama I can use indoors or outdoors. [Not weather proof!]

This is my version of 'Free' building. Otherwise I'd want to purchase a set of Legos to build. If I had room, I'd build a whole set of these 'forest' huts and lay it out on my 5 foot craft table as a tiny forest town.

So as it turned steamy in the afternoon, I decided to finish my project.

I painted the cardboard to look like dirt.

Then I added chunks of decorated bark and roots that I had made last year.

The bark chunks came from a downed tree and the pine cones came from our pine trees.

I don't glue down the other bits of roots and bark I am using so I can change the look as I need to.

I also don't draw out plans or think much of what I am doing. I just punt it because that's how my creative juices flow.

If I add something and it looks neat, I keep it. If it doesn't, I toss it.

Cardboard. Moss. Bark. Glue. Craft Paint. Fake Mushrooms. Some fake moss.
Railroad model flowers.

Imagination.

I added two of my favorite minifigures who are very much at home in the their magical forest.

...and then,

I set up my first scene to photograph.

I can use this stick building for so many things. The structure will fit a number of toys I have. The sides of the building can provide an interesting back drop for all sorts of scenes.

The best part about the whole thing is that it was built mostly from things I picked up in the yard at no cost!

Other Stick houses I've made:

Here is an old stick village I made and used for some scenes out in the woods. It was fun and when I left parts of it out in the forest to use again, some wild animal thought it would be great to pull it apart.

No harm done, I can always find more sticks to build with!

Today looks like a good day to beat the heat and enjoy some time reading and doing some Still Life Photography.

  1. That's an awesome stick house diorama! I love all the contrasting bark and moss but my favourite part is the pinecone "finials!"

    1. Thanks, that is the first time I added pine cones!

  2. I love your adventures in building. Do you ever build structures and leave them under trees, like stealth art?

    1. I have only because I come back and use them. Sometimes critters chew them up or move them. One little stick house survived the winter but was destroyed by something in the spring.

  3. Very sweet. It looks like the perfect thing to do inside on a sweltering day where you don't want to be outside enjoying your forest!

  4. You and your willing crew did a wonderful job! Today is going to be a scorcher, tell the occupants of their new building to stay inside.

    1. Monday is another worser-than-awful scorcher. The night was so humid we had low fog over the grasses at sunset! How strange. I couldn't even take a camera out to photo it as it was so damp it would harm the camera.

  5. You are to be commended for really sticking to it. Sorry not sorry for the bad pun.

  6. Gorgeous, magical houses. I am a fan of dollhouses and these are perfect for fairies, gnomes and whatever creatures you create to live in them. You are inspiring me. I need to make some little houses. Maybe I can talk my grandkids into some creations, too. Although at the moment all their little brains can comprehend is soccer.

    1. I had a doll house as a kid. If I recall correctly, we removed the dolls and let our toy animals live in the doll houses. Sometimes our plastic soldiers would visit too.

The creations of little stick houses take no planning, just materials and glue!
I get their fascination for soccer!

  7. I'm sorry you can't get outside but I am loving your creativity. Love the process too. I hope the heat lessens some. I know how you, Hannah and Charlie love to go on your hikes and I appreciate you taking us outside, and inside with your house building. Thanks Val!

    1. Oh I am outside doing chores at dawn and up through about 10am or when it gets unbearable.
Hannah and I hiked yesterday just in our pastures as Charlie wasn't in the mood to go.
The inside work was for the hottest parts of the day. It was HOT!

  8. Val, you are an inspiration. I am so mad that we gave away all the kids' lego. My gardening is getting the most of me.What can one do?!

    1. Let the garden go wild until things settle down! I usually plant my flowers in mass so I just weed around the edges, but I've let that go in this heat.

  9. Glad you're staying safe inside. It was 114 heat index in Kansas yesterday; same today. Remember not to start a little fire inside your stick village. Linda
