End of July

What does the end of July bring? Well, lots of flowers are blooming all over my yard.

The hummingbirds and humming bird moths are crazy busy sucking up that nectar.

I put morning glories in several places this year. I put one right outside the porch door and let it climb up a shepherd's hook.

Most of the flowers in front of the west porch area were variations of blue this summer. Of course, the Morning Glories take the cake!

July usually gives us a rest from mowing with a dry spell. Not this year. Mowing has to be done every 5 to 6 days. Maybe that is why I feel so behind on things. Days of wet, days and days of rain. No dry spells for the farmers to make hay.

The sunflowers are blooming too along with my Brown Eyed Susans. This is the first time I've grown them and they are doing so well.

In fact, they have been home to some elusive Crab Spiders.

They hide under the petals of the flowers and wait for a meal to drop by. They are ambush spiders that don't create webs to catch their prey.

August will bring the Orb Spiders out in force in the Meadow just east of us. That will be incredible to see again this year [hopefully]. Thousands of Orb Spider webs sparkling in the morning dew.

Air Quality was a huge factor on and off for July. Well, for this summer. Wildfires in the States and Canada are obviously contributing to the horrid atmosphere. However, the mules are pleased to be wandering a clipped pasture. The blueish haze is smoke.

We got a trip in to Cabela's yesterday and drove through driving rain. Hubby looked at the fish in their giant fish tank and was not impressed since he couldn't have any to eat.

On the way home, Steve as always took the scenic way home which includes as many back roads as possible.

This was a shot I took of the ridges above Prairie du Chien as we headed home. Shooting out the back window of a moving car is pretty challenging.

That's smoke too.

Today is much worse as the sun looks brownish and the haze is thick and smells bad.

Destinations...

My neighbor to the west of us came over yesterday to see about cutting down the pasture/weeds that have overgrown the area in front of the house. This is also one of the only flat-ish areas we have on our land.

Gary came over with his brand new tractor and my jaw hit the driveway gravel when I saw it. What a nice machine he finally got himself. A/C, Heat, and every other nice thing you could want in any vehicle.
He has a skid steer, a bulldozer, and cool attachments for his skid steer which is huge!

He made short work of my weeds and said the 6 ft burdock plants bogged his machine down. Imagine. I thought I could go out there with a machete and cut them. Huh. Guess I was kidding myself.

The mules are finding more grasses and browsing on the cut up plants. They don't seem particularly hungry which means they are finding good stuff all over the place.

Gary then thought he'd mess around a bit in the back side or the other meadow. He brush hogged all the multiflora rose bushes I'd been fighting for years against. He made very short work of the thistle patches.

When he was finished, he stopped by the house and visited with Rich for a little bit.

I'd told Gary I'd pay him and handed him the $$$ for the current going rate for brush hogging. He peeked at the cash and then started to refuse and I said, "Please take it. Running a tractor like that costs fuel and your time. Plus, do something nice ... like take Kim out to dinner."

He looked sheepish as he pocketed the money. Rich concurred. Gary then said he was going to repair our common fence on the west side. He was going to get some cattle again to keep down the brush and grasses in his acreage. He told us that now that Kim was retired, she liked to walk on their land.  Without cattle for the past 4 years, the brush and undergrowth has gotten out of hand.

His comment was: I caught hell for her not being able to hike around and look for sheds because the woods are full of crap now that we don't have cattle.

I offered to help with the fencing. We are supposed to split the cost when doing common fences between neighbors.

Seeing as that the fence hasn't been fixed well in over 30 years, it was really time. I can help with sharing the costs, but not much in chain sawing and stringing fence as I have to be close to the house.

Today, Wednesday, is supposed to be a fishing day, but the guy I hired last year to take down 6 trees texted me last night to come out and give me an estimate on some other work I'd like done to the yard.

He has free time to do estimates on rainy days. I do like working with him. He is young, curteous, and does good work. AND he keeps in contact with me even when he is busy and can't get out to see me right away.

I am also hoping to have some kind of excavating --> brush cleaning to a difficult part of the 'forest' that the gals like to hang out in. I'm going to change fencing to a more limited area. After all, I only have 3 equine left and they can't keep up with all of the growth. I can build the fence, but need an area cleared to do it.

The end game is to make this place look much nicer so it doesn't look  neglected by a couple of old fools.

When, in the future, I am ready to move off the farm, I want it the farm to look  like a charming place instead of weedy overgrown pastures and piles of 'good' junk stuff.

I'm starting now, because in a few years, I will probably move to an area where I can get public transport, groceries delivered, access to bike trails, parks, and health care close by. I realize that I eventually won't do well in a such a remote place.

I will miss my starry nights and forest trails. But I'm sure I can find happiness in just about any place I choose to live.

The conundrum is this. If I get this little farm looking exactly how I imagine it should be, then I will I leave?

Life is a process isn't it?

Wait, What?

Wait, what day is it?

What happens when all of your days blend together?

Some times you don't sleep well and other nights you are just plain restless. One of those nights I woke up ... wide awake at 1:30 in the morning. There was no going back to sleep so I went out on the porch and decided to look at the sky.

Yes, I am very fortunate to live in a 'hollow' with the nearest street lamps 12 miles away. If I go up on the ridge, the yard lights of farms across the ridge do 'pollute' the night sky. So lucky lucky me. I can admire the stars from my porch and my driveway.

Porch view of that night's Milky Way.
It was clear enough for the naked eye, but the camera can pick up so many more details.

Is it no surprise that I fell in love with the night skies while living here for the past 29 years?
The stars give me a sense of peace and wonderment [as do most things in nature].

I went out to try a selfie of me looking up at the Milky Way. It didn't work. Other years I've gotten the beam from my headlamp to show up in the humid air...
Not so this night. I tried over and over. So then I turned the red light on and twirled it for a 25 second photo.
It is called light painting, which I never really got the hang of.
But I thought it turned out neat.

I'm going to try it again but wear dark clothes and use some glow sticks.

Here are some random Toy shots I just felt like doing on an overcast afternoon.
The Goat herder seems unaware that he is being watched. Squatch who is one of my favorite toys is still around Aurora! He often joins the Legos on adventures!

This Rock Monster set up on the cookie tray with a clay mushroom I made, along with bits of plastic leaves and chunks of wood.

Of course. the Evil King and Queen of ... hmmm, I don't know what to name their kingdom, do you have a suggestion?

While out watching the hummingbirds and the clearwing hummingbird moth, I placed an HO figure on one of the Blazing Stars just to see what would occur.

And he looked as though he became a Bee Keeper! 👇

I spent some time outside yesterday morning with both my macro and long lens. I still have to go through a lot of photos of flowers, birds, bees, and other insects. By 9am, I had finished up outside and mowed a tiny bit before coming in for a shower.

The rest of the day was taken up with a morning visit with hubby's nurse and and afternoon visit for his sponge bath. Rich looks forward to these interactions.

So, yesterday was Monday. Let's see what today brings.
I'm  going to meet a friend I met at the gym and go see her place.

I feel a bit wicked knowing that I have some free time to do something different.

So yeah.
Wait
What?

Humming birds/moths/Infrared tour

The Clearwing Hummingbird Moths have finally showed up to feast on the Bee Balm. Of course they generally show up on the hottest days of July, but if you wish to see them, you have to sit patiently and watch for them.

I was fairly far from the flowers... on the back step to the house which was in the shade.

Remember the crooked and ancient looking outhouse in March? It looked SO pitiful!

Well, it looks like an aged old beauty right now. Maybe that is why I've kept from demolishing it.

I enjoy trying to 'catch' the hummingbirds doing their thing with the Bee Balm also.
This is 3 shots combined into one.
Thankfully, the camera has an exceptional image stabilizer and ON1 allows for layers to be aligned when loaded!

I like to do these kinds of shots, they just seem so fun to look at. I think I'm going to do a bird calendar next year for all of my favorite birds shots from this year.

I can't wait to capture some action with some butterflies. I would hope to see some Swallowtails and Monarchs just because they are so incredibly beautiful.

Sunday morning I had to run an errand in town to pick up some milk and other 'stuff' you know, the stuff you forget the last time you shopped.

Since I went very early [hubby's early morning nap time], I took a little more time driving to town and back. I took my Infrared Camera with me. The fog here was dense and it had been such a l-o-n-g time since I'd been able to get out and admire the morning light and take some shots.

Along a ridge road --> a not shortcut road to town. The fog was so dense there was no sky but I thought the telephone/power poles made a neat shot with the road curving off into the distance.

The fog started to lift as I came through this ridge towards the county road that leads to the highway....that leads to town!
I just love the undulation of the different strips of crops and lines that the eyes wouldn't see in regular color.

Here the morning sun comes out on another cut across gravel road I took.

A bit further down the road the sun came out peeked between clouds. I was following buggy tracks. The buildings on the left side of the road belong to a few Amish families.

More photos taken on the way home from town on another gravel road between the highway and the county road. One of my favorite ways to go home.

This shot was taken on our road as I headed home with a cooler of ice cream and all sorts of good veggies to make cold meals of fruits and veggies.

I had hoped to get some nice steaks. I looked at some steaks that I've purchased a month ago for $25 to $30 bucks. That would feed us 2 suppers and one lunch.

The sticker shock of $45.00 stopped me in my tracks. I won't be able to afford to eat beef! I picked up pork chops and chicken.
Hubby is going to have to forgo eating steaks [which is what he is so into right now].

It makes me sad to think I let my little beefers go a few years ago. I am also thankful that our friend Steve has supplied us with some amazing fish and venison.

The sky and ridge as I turned onto one of our gravel roads.

And then....
down this lane and into the woods to our place....

All these shots were done with a camera that was modified to take Infrared photos with different
filters of different wave lengths. I use the 665nm filter for all shots.
I normally take this camera out a lot when driving to and from places when
there is an interesting sky.

Today is supposed to be blistering hot so I did all the chores before 7am and even did my last bit of mowing with my little mower. Boy that mower hated the wet tall grass, but I got it done, cleaned the mower, and put it away.

Success

Because I can, I am going to drop a few flower shots on here first.  My morning glories are starting to bloom. The flowers are so brilliant this one was partially open in the downpour we got on Wednesday. Thank goodness for long lenses.

I've planted morning glories in about 4 or 5 places and am enjoying their colors.

The next two are Love in the Mist.
I really adore the odd shapes of these delicate flowers. The delicate fern like leaves
are just so beautiful.

Meanwhile the moss roses are doing so well. This is my first success at growing them. I spread the seeds in a very large container and waited.  They have not disappointed me at all this year.

Here is a young katydid, I think that was hiding in the moss roses! I almost didn't detect it as it was so well camouflaged.

Well, with the plumber coming any time on Friday, I stayed home for my 'Respite' time. It actually worked out well. When Tammy came [early!], we sat down at our table and we got to know each other for a bit. I told her about the hot water issue.

I decided to do a project that I couldn't do when she wasn't around, like cleaning in the basement. The shop vac makes a lot of noise and I couldn't hear if hubby needed help.

When hubby woke up, she took over and I headed to the basement to purge and clean. Tammy cared for Rich and made Snickerdoodle cookies.

I helped her familiarize herself with where things were in my kitchen and any other questions she had about cleaning, the commode, laundry, etc. She changed the hospital bed for me and then I showed her how to operate our washing machine.

I lugged 'stuff' out of the basement and dumped it on the porch. More purging. I took out old beat up hunting boots that would never get worn again, cheap snow pants that hubby used ages ago with holes in them.

I finally got rid of the chunks of wood that hubby had been saving for 'something' too along with some odd cut small pieces of particle board and plywood. I tossed old hunting sweatshirts that had seen much better days.

Things that were hanging on pegs in the basement that he'd never use again were purged. None of it was in any condition to be passed on.

I slayed cobwebs with the ShopVac and made sure the area around the questionable water heater was clean and accessible. It was quite the job. I had no interruptions and was able to get the work done efficiently with many trips up and down the stairs and to the back of my Subaru so I could take boxes of stuff to the dump.

Tammy made cookies and did all the things that I normally have to do. Get drinks of water, get a snack, help with this or that. It was like we were working as a team. She had the 'patient' and I had no interruptions.

Her snickerdoodles were amazing. She cleaned up as she went and even changed hubby's bed and made him lunch.

I finally got to do some of the all the important things that I couldn't get done while caring for hubby.

After lunch, she helped Rich to bed and then asked what else she could do. It was almost her quitting time.

I asked if she could have a seat so we could visit and get to know each other. I had this feeling that she could have a lot of helpful things to share.

She and I are of the same generation. We both grew up in similar ways. We don't let things go to waste.

She is a grandma that legally adopted her grandkids. She cared for her 'kids' and her husband while he was in Hospice. She had been certified as a Caregiver and has worked in different areas as well as a local Senior Assisted Living place not far from her home.

We talked a lot about Hospice and our shared experience, also of what she had gone through. We ended up feeling more like kindred spirits. What a relief to know that my feelings, my experiences, my doubts, angst, frustrations, and emotional ups and downs are very normal. We found a sister like bond in our lives.

We had a very interesting conversation that I'll write about later.

As she was leaving and the Plumber was arriving, I said to her that the most important part of our Respite time together was her support, her experiences and our talk. I didn't feel alone in this journey any more.

It is one thing to read about or share experiences virtually, but to sit down face to face with someone else who has been there and has gone through it is much more valuable.

Paul the Plumber came and tested the heater. He measured the water temp still in the heater at 140 F! That after it being turned off for 24 hours.
He changed the thermostats on the elements and emptied out the scalding water so we could make sure that the water heated to the right temperature.

Charlie adores Paul and sits in the basement to watch Paul work.

By 2pm, my day was done and I was ready to sit down and read a book. The yard mowing could wait another day.

I considered yesterday as a good day.

Here we go!

Charlie got his first Pup Cup at Culvers on our way home from the vet where we got his nails trimmed up nicely and his flea and tick meds for the next 3 months.

Yikes. Let's just say $$$$!

However hubby wanted a sandwich from Culvers so I went through the drive up with Charlie, it was too hot to leave him in the car while I ordered.

So the gals at the pay window went nuts when they saw Charlie and asked if he could have a Pup Cup.

Charlie decided it was awesome and that he'd definitely go to town again with me and get Dad a 'Sammich' at Culvers.

I think it also helped him with the 'trauma' of getting his toenails trimmed. -- He howls when it is done even though he is not being hurt! What a goofy dog!

Below is one of the colorful Lilies I ordered from Edens Garden this spring. I was gobsmacked by how beautiful this was! I have six of them in different colors and I now will make sure to locate them in a place where I can enjoy them more next year.

Another kind of seed - flower I ordered. I don't recall the name, but I love the delicate ferny leaves it has. These are blooming in blue and white. I can imagine planting a huge plot of them!

Their seed pods are really quite cool too.
Guess who will be collecting these seeds for next year!

I would love it if my things that I had to go get done would fall on days that were more convenient. You know, like a respite day.
But that isn't how life is.

Just when you think you have things all figured out...  ðŸ¤¯ðŸ¤¯ðŸ¤¯ðŸ¤¯
Things go sideways.

So I brought Rich home his Rueben and discovered that they didn't put the dressing on the sandwich. Hmmm.

I had to get a cloth to wash up his hands and turned the water on warm...I nearly got scalded.
WHUT?
Hmmm?

I tried the bathroom faucet, same thing, bathtub, same thing. I assumed then that the water heater [electric] had malfunctioned and the element or whatever that controlled the temperature had failed.

I went downstairs and shut the power off to the water heater while I was on the phone to the plumbing company we use.

The gal said she'd have someone out tomorrow between 2 and 4 would that be okay?
Yes, sure it would.
Then she said if she could get someone out earlier in the morning would that be okay?

Yup.
Oops. Well tomorrow is Tammy's second Respite shift here and it looks like I can't go 'Respiting' [is that even a word?]. However, it would be a good time for the two of us to get to know each other better and I could answer her questions about other things.

AND
I could take time to do some purging in the basement without any interruptions while waiting for the plumber.

AND I could do some fence fixing down in the woods without worrying about leaving hubby on his own while I was a quarter mile away in the back 40!

AND I could go hunt up fungi and slime mold and ... play Legos and...ohhh the possibilities are endless!

While I was out doing a bit of weeding, I noticed my neighbor with his monster sized skid steer brush hogging his messy pasture. Ding Ding! ðŸ¤¯

I had another brain strain. I've been calling around and trying to get someone to come out and cut up my weeds/pasture and a little bell went off in my brain.
Gary and his wife to the west of us have always said, if you need something. Just ask.
So I sent a message to Kim and asked if Gary could mow/hog/whatever ... our front pasture and the meadow.
I am awaiting the answer. It is okay if he says no, I'll just be back to my square one.

This year, I am doing a lot of asking. I asked Justin for help, he helped. I asked Olive for help, she helped [we trade off to each other all of the time], I asked Steve [fishing buddy] for help. He will bring a crew this fall to cut the trees off the fenceline and help me clean up another area.

Oh and now I see that my text looks weird on this post. Yeah, I'm not going to fix it. That happened when I copied and pasted the brain exploding . Huh. ðŸ¤¯ðŸ¤¯ðŸ¤¯ðŸ¤¯ðŸ¤¯ðŸ¤¯

Well, I won't do that again. I'll just stop here before more brain explosions go off in my head and call it quits. I refuse to go back and fix everything tonight with the headache I have echoing in my head.

Tomorrow is another adventure.

Some fun & Close...

I thought I'd have some fun on Sunday with my Lego Castle set.  I wanted to do more than just a few neat shots like the one below.

This is Clarence, he is one of the Castle Guards.

After this shot, I thought it would be really fun to try a 'stop motion'. I did it the old fashioned way without an app to help. I guess there is an app you can install on your phone to do this and there is also and AI app called NaukNauk which will take a still video of a minifigure and make it into a short animated film.  It is slick as all get out. I feel like it is a cheap cheat, even though I've seen little videos that are pretty fun.

But it isn't true stop motion like I learned as a kid. I learned from the artists at my dad's office as they did animation. It was careful step by step drawing or using a photograph. I learned the old fashioned way.

I enjoyed this so much, it was quite a bit of fun.

In this castle there is a skeleton that has been locked in a cell. Obviously, the guards must have forgotten to feed him!

Looks like he is happy to have escaped!

After the last storm I had to go check for more downed trees. There was one. What a year for falling trees!

I of course had an idea for something fun to shoot while checking.

I used battery powered mini-lights and strung them out on a deer trail then placed my space people in the path and viola!

I didn't even think of a follow up to this shot...but I imagined the minifig in the orange saying to the other astronaut: See! I told you I saw strange lights!

I was just happy to quickly set things up and grab the shot and be on my way back home.

Though I did find these....
They were way passed their prime of course but I think they could have been some sort of Boletes. When they are fresh, they look rather beautiful.

There were more 'False Coral Mushrooms' popping up in one area of the forest that I had to backtrack through as the original ridge trail now has been blocked by fallen trees from the last few storms. No fence damage, but it is a pain to climb through or go around.

My Monday was a success. I called all the places I had to call and did all the boring things I had to do, then took some time to sit on the porch and watch the birds and think about the upcoming heat wave. This part of the summer is not my favorite.

By evening the air was breathless. However, I did still see lightening bugs! They must really love heat and humidity and ... still nights. I think my Grandmother used to describe weather like this as: Close.

Close: a weather condition when the relative humidity and the temperature are both the same. Often with no breeze where the air feels stagnant and heavy making it hard to breathe.

The A/C will get a work out for the next few days. It will be 'close'.

Sunday stuff

Sunday was a rest day, I had a ton of outdoor work to do, however, I decided that I was going to goof off and just do things that pleased me [aside from caring for hubby].

This just goes to show you that toy ... or Still Life photography can be done anywhere and any time. This is my bed that is in the living room. I got a piece of painted plywood that I've used for years as a top for my 'creative' table --which is now on the porch. The clean white surface is great for working with crafts or toys.

In this case I needed a space that was solid enough to use to balance Legos.

There is my ex-cookie tray with my wood pieces. The challenge was to 'make' a scene that did not look like it was sitting on my bed.

This was the result.

I also took out my castle and had some fun with that. I did a little stop motion scene but that will have to wait until I have more goof off time to process that.

Below is my tiny entry way table that is my 'flower' stand. I filled my vases with an assortment of flowers and was surprised at how beautiful bouquets of Queen Anne's Lace are! This was Queen Anne's Lace and Hosta flowers that were leaning over the back stoop.

Of course my Dragons and dried mushrooms and flower petals keep my table interesting. To me it is just perfect.

And this is me just before bed. I thought I'd try a selfie hint I saw on the internet. I propped the camera on the coffee maker and put it on a timer.

Olive gave me a haircut on the porch and I love it. It saved me time, worry, and expense of making an appointment in my 'allotted' me time.

The stuff behind me is our entryway. It is filled with oxygen containers and all of that crap you drop by the back door.

I was sort of surprised by how I looked. It almost looks as if I am really sad and tired. I may be tired, but definitely not really sad. Maybe a bit worn out.

So there it is, a current photo of me that I won't faint at.

Here it is Monday and this is the day that I picked to do all of the things I hate the most. You know, balancing the checkbook, making phone calls and making lists of things I need to get done and things I don't want to do but must.

Oh, and the weekly grocery list. I really don't like shopping or preparing meals.
