Quiet time.
Puzzles.
Reflection on self.
Movement.
We chatted and worked on a puzzle. Well, she worked on it, I watched.
Kristi asked what I was doing Saturday. I said that Charlie and I were probably going to take a hike. The weather looked better for the afternoon.
She said she'd like to go too. I cocked an eye and said "It's a 5 mile hike, you in?"
"Sure."
Aside from friend Bill, I've not really had any of my gym or other friends actually want to go with me on long hikes.
I am super blessed to have young and adventurous friend[s].
I packed my YakTraks [the trails would be icy and packed] and brought a pair for her.
Of course, the Master Hiker led the way and kept us on track.
We stopped at 'his' stump so he could pose for us.
The weather was perfect about 18 degrees F [-7.7 C] with a whisper of a breeze.
The conversation was all over the place and quiet while we climbed hills and navigated tree roots buried under snow and ice.
We both felt very peaceful hiking together. I don't have to worry about Kristi's keeping up. She is more than 20 yrs younger than I am and is an exceptional athlete. She is getting ready to do a competition next month and she felt that some difficult hikes with me would be good for her stamina.
That made me chuckle. Her friendship has opened up social activities for me that are fun. We even discussed plans to go Kayaking this summer on the Kickapoo River together with her family.
Maybe the new year may not be as bad as I thought.
...and I am almost ready for Monday and all the crappy paperwork I have to do.

Your vista has widened, Val! I am really glad.
♡
Some people will read "hiking in 18-degree weather" and say, "oh hell no!" I say, bring it on! 20 degrees is like the perfect temperature for hiking, cutting wood, ice fishing, pretty much any outdoor activity!
True, IF you have grown up or lived in cold climates, it is a rather nice temperature especially if the wind is just a light breeze.
I know that many of the outdoor people prefer to do work outside in just this kind of weather.
Dress properly and the winter world is yours!
Well, a bright spot is always welcome. Not caring for someone 24hrs a day opens up opportunities even though I am sad about it, I am happy.
I'm glad your hiking stamina is a good example to "youngsters," lol! Kristi sounds great.
I'm sure she could have out hiked me but she said she would have gotten lost.
She is too kind.
What an awesome way to start the new year!! Glad you found a hiking partner :)
Some paperwork is halfway pleasant, but i don't think yours sounds like that.
Nice that you have a hiking companion when there is snow and ice!
Pup on a Stump looks really regal! Does the yellow hot rod compete with Match Box cars? Nice to find a match for your hiking ability. Just get a box and some file folders for those papers to get it ready a little easier. Probably shouldn't use any for fireplace material just yet. Linda in Kansas
The paper work takes a lot of effort, but I am very confident that you will get through it. So nice that you have a hiking buddy in addition to Charlie. Imagine the additional possibilities when we move into spring. You are doing very well....so strong!
Glad that you're almost ready for Monday. This was an enjoyable read. So many bloggers I follow, you ladies write in a way that makes me feel like I'm right there along for the ride. Really well done. The car is too cute. Love the added gang.
Hanging out with your friend Kristi is the medicine you needed to finish the year. That is quite the lego build, too. I hate to tell you but nothing will make you feel better about paperwork. I know it is my least favorite thing.
A true friend is one who will come on a hike with you! My kind of people..
What a lovely start! You are taking 2026 one step at a time. That's a good plan. All the best.
Well, we'll be on again and off again. I may move my Siera mule to her place for the summer so we can go on riding dates together. She has a lot of riding areas.
Her husband was Rich's Hospice nurse and we've known each other since 2018. I'm looking forward to more adventures this year.
It is sorting into piles, filing and getting things put into file folders that have to be looked at by an accountant. Yuck.
It will feel good when it is finished.
I may be tempted to purchase a matchbox car to see how they compare. I've heard they are better and they are worse. One will see.
I'm not generally a fan of the vehicles, but thought this would be a fun build when I got visitors -- who couldn't come while I was so sick. So I got bored and built it.
Putting the right characters in the car just didn't seem as much fun as using the monsters!
I keep finding out more and more about her kindness and consideration of other people. She is just like that.
Most of the folks my age aren't into hilly and demanding hiking, but I like it and she does too as it challenges your stamina, balance, and navigating abilities.
Thanks, it feels like a whirlwind start. I've been out doing something each day so far this year!
