I hesitate to title this as I love ice....

 You all know why.

However, real true ice made out of water dripping through porous rocks and freezing in ice curtains over rock shelters or rock faces are uniquely beautiful.

Nature creates this with her weather in the winter. The water is almost always seeping through these formations and in the winter the hillsides that don't get sunlight stay colder allowing the ice to begin to form.

I feel that December through March, it is 'my' weird obsession to hunt out ice formations and see them. I enjoy figuring out where is the most likely place they will be and then photographing them. Often, I get to the same place over and over to watch it change.

This is what the ice cave area looks like as the end of winter comes around and the ice formations melt. With the ice is gone, it looks rather bland and uninteresting. In late March, the temps warm and the sun changes its angle and shines through the leafless trees to melt the ice.

What it looked like on Monday with its winter beauty. The top right 'cave' is the one I usually go into and photograph. It isn't easy to get there and it takes a bit of caution and of course good ice cleats.

Charlie explored it, took a drink of chilled ice water and then watched the valley below. He doesn't wander off. If I take too long exploring, he'll come and look at me and then whine.

I swear he is saying "Enough, let's get on with it!"

Mostly the water is always seeping or dripping and the temperatures cause the water to make these formations. Wouldn't it be cool to have a time lapse camera on these?

We made it down to where Weister creek has ice formations on its sandstone walls. I rerouted up and over the hogback and then down into the valley to avoid the fallen trees from last year's storms.

I only used my Infrared camera here because the colors where so fun. The red is the green mosses and a dying pine branch which cover the very small ice formations on the rock. To me, it looked like it could be a fairy cave.
Why not?

This is as far as I go in the wintertime to this last wall of rocks and ice. You can see where the rains from last week raised the water level and evened out the icicles.

I always stop at this spot and enjoy a few moments photographing the ice formation on this bank of Weister Creek. This was the view on Monday.

I love this spot in all seasons.

Springtime:

With each flash flood or heavy rain, the form of the creek changes slightly with fallen trees, roots, and shapes of the shores.

You can probably tell that this is my favorite place to visit in the winter time.

I have many other places I like to see out. I do this mostly solo because I don't have to rush and I can explore as I wish.

Sometimes I just think about blending into these places and never leaving. When my life ends, I'd love my ashes to be part of these places.

A walk

You could technically call it a hike, but we weren't putting a lot of effort into it. The hardest part was the mosquito-y portion right by the river with a muddy path flanked by waist high weeds.

The new management has had a shortage of people working for them in this year and it shows in places where they used to do some weed management. I imagine with the 69+ miles of trails, it is not an easy job to keep things trimmed back.

Anyway, we made it out to the first set of ponds and there really wasn't much going on in the ponds themselves.

Charlie chose little trail that heads off to the bird blind area. I wasn't going to take it as I was sure I'd be carried off by giant skeeters.

But in the end, Charlie made the best decision. Sometimes you just need to follow the dog!

There was a pair of swans at the other end of the pond where I'd take a photo of a pair this spring. I think they may have nested there, I can't be sure since I couldn't get back to this part of the reserve for the past 6 months.

The surprise however was this! Is it a young mute swan? I don't know. I will look it up. However, I didn't get a close up shot so I could see its face. It was too far off.

It just means I'll have to come back one morning without Charlie so as not to alarm them. Yes, he is small but his dog tags alert birds to his presence.

We walked along the paved bike/hike/cross country ski trail and admired the fall beauties we found. I think these are white prairie asters. The bees were having a great time with all the fall wild flower choices.

We stopped after a couple of miles and decided to hang out on the floating dock that has a bench to sit on. Charlie needed the rest and a big drink from my water bottle.

I think we sat there a good long time just watching the scenery around us and the changing light and the moving duck weed.

Charlie had a great time. He sat quietly next to me in his 'car seat' and rested up on the way home. All afternoon we worked on weeding out my flower patch to the outhouse.

Some things I have decided to get done to assist myself with the empty house syndrome.

I started to look up state parks in my general part of the state. I've actually found 3 places I have been to long ago but want to go back and explore to them intimately.

Governor Dodge, Perot State Park, and Wyalusing State Park are all about an hours drive from my house. State Natural Areas are also on my list.

I checked out what the cost would be to camp in my car or get a room (dog friendly).

Now, instead of listening to the roaring silence in the house, I have some goals for exploring.

This week I am adding a little dog tailer to my bicycle. I think Charlie would like to go with me when I am biking on those nice flat railroad bed trails.

Cheap affordable hiking is what I need to do to start feeling like myself again, I think. It feels weird to expand my hiking area to an hour travel time away. Once I conquer that, I could go futher!

Charlie this evening, we've been getting rain for hours along with nonstop thundering [which he hates].

Stunned...

Below is a place we call PeeWee's Dump. I thought it would be a great place to explore with some of my characters.

Yeah...
that didn't work out well....

That gaping hole in the earth that is surrounded by metal, plastic, old bottles and shredded unidentifiable things made Charlie very nervous.
It is a perfect place for 'possum and perhaps other critters to hang out.

However, it is close to home and it is a perfect spot for some toy shots that would include the MiniBots and perhaps some evil Lego characters or other nefarious toys.

I've used the partial milk can more than once in some photo 'shoots'. Getting to this spot in the summer is really difficult because of the brush. I always seem attracted to junk piles when the forest is resting itself..

Last January I fell in love with this spot.

Well, that was a wash, so I moved on and followed Charlie down the gravel road.

That lead me to these shots...

I had a productive walk. I went in by the fire number for this land and discovered another tennis shoe, barbed wire, bent t-posts, and a rusted bucket.

I couldn't help but investigate the possibilities of the rusted bucket.

The day was heavily overcast and rather dull looking, but the air was fresh and felt nice. We walked out onto the cropland and looked over the ridge. I hope Linda [the farmer that rents this land] will plant soybeans on this field this spring. It is easier to enjoy all year long when walking out to watch the sun come up.

When I got home I was floored by more dreadful news.
Who let Musk into the Treasury and what are they stealing? This should strike fear into everyone.

Duck Egg

 Wait ~ Whut??

What is a Duck Egg?
Silly, it is an Equestrian and Hiking County Park in Vernon County!

Photo from Vernon County Website

There is a lower Duck Egg and and Upper Duck Egg. It is a 707 acre piece of property with a flood control dam for the Springville Branch of the Bad Axe River. More reading about it at our Vernon County Land and Water Conservation Site ~ here: Duck Egg.

Our county has a few parks like this which makes our area pretty unique. We love our streams and rivers [trout fisherman like them too]. The streams and rivers over many years have caused floods and dams were built to lessen the risk.

Our parks are free and have trails that are beautiful to enjoy. Generally I visit Duck Egg in the spring and the fall. In the spring, the lower Duck Egg trail presents with so many of the first spring flowers. They are right alongside the trail and are easy to find.

I have ridden all the equestrian trails back in the day and would like to explore hiking them in the future. Here are some shots from a previous post in 2020 where I recap our history of riding and exploring Duck Egg.

The equine trails are kept up by riding clubs which I find amazing. The lower trail must have once been a road as it is wide and mostly flat with some places where it is muddy.

Recently a group of volunteers added hand rails to the foot bridges over the Bad Axe. I think it was a nice touch even though the lack of hand rails never bothered me.

The equine trail through a the river on the side of the bridge. The crossings are solid with no surprises.

Charlie and I just went for a walk from the parking area to the pond and back. I wanted to see what was blooming after our crazy weather last week.

We were not disappointed.

Blood Root

Dutchman's Breeches

Hepatica

Anemones

I am always so surprised and pleased to see this one spot of wood anemones that literally blankets the forest floor. It is simply stunning.

I'll have to make a trip back this weekend if the weather is good as the area with Virginia Bluebells had plants just emerging.

Charlie and I crossed the second footbridge and walked to the pond.

We went out to the Bad Axe and climbed out to the large rock that resides in the middle of the fast flowing water.

A few years ago, a friend of mine brought their young dog who jumped off the bridge into the fast flowing stream. The dog was swept away in the current but made it safely to the bank about 50 feet downstream after both the dog and owner panicked.

Charlie won't jump into the stream. He is old enough now to know better and he has an aversion to deep water anyway.

We scouted out a deer trail and went up along the river to a spot I hadn't explored before.

One of the signs along Lower Duck Egg. It always makes me laugh and tilt my head. I think they are working on replacing it. It used to have a map showing where the Loggers Trail met up with the Duck Egg Trail.

Charlie and I followed the path worn down by trout fisher-persons along the Springville/Bad Axe branch back to the parking area after we crossed the bridge.

I've got so many good memories of hiking this very trail with Mr. Morris over the years hunting spring flowers and fall colors. I can't help but think of that each time I go. This park is also the place that hubby and I rode frequently on our mules during the last years we rode together.

I don't know why it is called Duck Egg. I've done a search on it and never got an answer. The park is reviewed over and over by fly fishermen and trout fisherpersons as a wonderful place to go.

Me? I just like it for a nice easy walk on the lower portion. If I want a strenuous hike I do the 4 mile loop that gives you and ascent of 709 feet from the dam to the top of the ridge. Duck Egg valley is steep!

Duck Egg and I have been friends for many years...

The Wander-er

I have a lot of catching up to do.

This week we had ice on Monday, snow and sleet on Wednesday. Charlie and I headed out in the morning to visit the Forest/Rock Garden. I've finally figured out that this little place is perfect for tall shade plants, but it takes a lot of work

The old Christmas Chair. I may decide to bring that back to the house for next year. The seat is split and it is very weathered, just how I like it. Right now, it is on a tiny rock bluff that overlooks the neighbor's woods west of us.

The photo below is of the Buckthorn Woods. The trees are horrible and invasive, but have been there for nearly 20 years or so. The deer love being in there. I put my trail camera back up after having it in another spot for the last few months.
It generally picks up deer napping right in front of the camera. The trail here is used by all woodland creatures.

Our neighbor and plow guy came Thursday morning and cleaned up our place. He sent another fella out to sand our hill and in front of the house. I am grateful that he agreed to plow for us this winter. It sure took a lot of worry off my mind.

Charlie and I headed out for a mile walk. For a little dog, he has a lot of energy that needs to be spent. I'm trying to keep track of how far I hike right now just out of curiosity.

This particular day, I only hiked one mile of hills and the creek. The snow was soft and mushy and would have clumped up in ice chunks under my snowshoes. The workout was worth the effort.

Now I'm trying something a bit different and I am not exactly sure if this is the best method. I need to know from the readers if this is interesting or not....
this ends up being something like 23 seconds. It is sort of fun and funky.
I downloaded a trial of Corel Video Studio after trying several time to get MovieMaker from Microsoft which used to be free.
Now they want a monthly fee or yearly fee.

I have been taking a few more videos with my Olympus camera and thought this might work for mixing panorama videos of areas with some photos. Meh. I'm not too sure about it.

I don't always want to watch a video when reading blogs, but this seems to be the new-ish trend. I can see where learning the program could be fun with more creative ideas.

I did a lot more Wandering this week. I hiked back to the Lost Valley, Hidden Valley, or The Back Valley which is a 3 mile snowshoe trek on Friday. I haven't been back there in over a year.

That was a neat discovering adventure. Saturday I wandered the west bank of the Kickapoo River and found some amazing sites.

Those updates will come later.

I am finding my winter groove in Exploring and it brings me so much peace.

Let me know how you feel about the vid. I have a LOT to learn, but during those long cold dreary days of winter, it could be a new creative skill to learn.

Have a Great Sunday.

Meanwhile

I keep enjoying the weather. It is cold, and earlier this week it was wicked. The Winds were blowing hard and this light and beautiful snow was falling.

I decided to take an early morning walk with Charlie. We hadn't been out in the woods for over a week and my feet were getting 'itchy' to wander.

The winds were so brutal in the open areas that I wore a balaclava and a pair of over the glasses goggles to keep my eyes protected from the cold winds. We made it to the Creek and enjoyed our time just wandering about and enjoying the fresh air out of the fierce winds.

There we are in our safety vests. I'd made some adjustments to Charlie's vest and now it doesn't impede his running or jumping. He and I are ready for winter hiking.

I took some of my characters with me. Big Foot wanted to find a nice tree for the village so he took one of the Polar Bears along. It looks like they found one!

Hobby, the photographer went along too. Gosh, it looks like her hair is getting grey just like mine! She always has her camera. [I painted her hair...]

[Hubby says she is me. She always has a camera in hand and is searching for something little to take photos of.]

I'd promised to make chocolate chip cookies for us [ewwww...baking!] so after shooting snowflakes on moss sporophytes, I headed towards home.

When I started putting together the cookies, I decided to see if my Lego folks could help. I discovered that I'd left Hobby in the forest!

I was sort of elated that it would give me a second chance to head back out.

I know. I am crazy.

It was amazing that I found her exactly where I left her.

It seems someone needs to keep an eye on the Lego Village....

Uh oh, no one is watching the
bears!

Looks like everyone is
gathering candy cane
decorations.

And so it goes. Hope you are all having a good weekend.
