Just stuffss

 They started on the woods to the east of me....

I know the absentee landowners needed $$$ for their taxes. They've leased out the land in sections for hunting and farming. Apparently it doesn't pay enough.

Sigh.

This was one of my walking trails...
I guess I won't freak out because it IS not my land.
They need the money.
The understory will grow back in.

But damn, it looks ugly.

These are the tops of the magnificent oak trees they cut down. The tops are left where they land and the oak logs are taken.

I know all of this, it has been years since I've seen another section of this land logged.

The stump of one of my favorite oaks. The sunlight pours into the forest now with these grand old oaks cut down.

However, my creative thinking says this would be a perfect dystopian backdrop for some of my toys.
Right? What better place to show off the damage to the earth.

This logging is not for forest health. It is for cash and quick money.

My neighbor who is a 'forester' goes around our county and helps people manage their forests for a healthy forest.
His biggest concern was the logging company taking oak trees in the spring.

Oak wilt is a huge concern and spreads with this activity in the warmer weather. He wished they'd done this work in the winter.

I calmly explained to him that the owners are not stewards of the land. They only want money for leasing and money for profit [I think]. Someone pointed out that a lot of land owners log off their forest before selling the land.

Uffdah.

The dynamic of the forest will be changed. It is not my land but I know it so well from walking it for 29 years. Last summer......

How it will change remains to be seen.

Things change and we have to adapt.

Lil' Bear looks at the stump and at the forest....

~~~~~
I had meant to show off some birds we've seen in the past few days. But this was on my mind.
I wonder how it will affect the two families of the Pileated Woodpeckers in this forest. This was one of them visiting just the other day. Chipping at the deer skull on the tree for some calcium perhaps?
Turkey Day was Lasagna
Our Thanksgiving was just a peaceful and quiet day. I'd made our lasagna the day before and thawed one of hubby's favorite pies I'd purchased from a Mennonite bakery. Peach pie.
Of course we are non traditional, why not? Whatever floats your boat, right?
While the hunters were out stuffing their faces, I got outside in the cold weather.
I found treasures.
A box elder tree had frozen sap running from a broken branch. In the drop at the end you can see the forest and meadow reflected upside down.
In the buckthorn woods I found mossy logs with frost coming up out of their centers.
The crystals of ice and frost were beautiful. This was a look into the hole.
With the rest of the forest looking rather bleak, I found the mossy logs to be the most interesting. I imagine the center of the log was warmer from the previous warm days and had a lot of moisture.
As the moisture moved up and out, it formed the frosty crystals on the moss.
I only found it in this one place where the land hollows out in the forest. It is a bit of a swale but heavily shadowed and full of logs and downed trees from storms we had nearly 20 years ago. This section of our woods reminds me of the Mirkwood forest in The Hobbit, but without the frightening spiders!
It is a rather peaceful place both in all seasons.
October ...
Say goodbye to October.
The colors were incredible, the weather was quite beautiful but awfully dry. It was really a month to celebrate fall.
My camera was busy.
I hiked around our farm and sought out trails.
I enjoyed the beauty of golds, reds, and the colors of October skies.
I watched wild life while leaning up against an ancient old oak.
I listened to the birds chatter as they migrated through, stopping to rest in the yard and meadows.
I chuckled at the squirrels who scolded me from the Hickory trees.
I often sat quietly on the porch or a log in the woods, just to live in the moment.
and now we move on to the next chapter....
November....
Well that was something!
Three days ago, I found myself seated on the rocks at the bottom of my creek, creating a 'space' story against an 'interesting' backdrop.
The creek bottom was my chosen spot, thanks to its cool rocks and mosses. I like this spot and use it often. I gives me a chance to get away from the house and enjoy some peace and quiet in the forest.
For the past 28 years, this area had water flowing through it. Not deep, just a few inches of water flowing over the rocks.
Now?
Anyway, I was literally able to sit on the rocks and arrange my setup in a dry section. Recent rains have cleared many weeds and rocks from the creek's bed.
24 hours later, the scene had changed.
And then, another day passed...
A boulder was moved along with several logs. It was the result of 3 inches of rain for the day's total along with one downpour that dropped an inch and a half in less than 45 minutes.
Yet, the rain performed its intended role in the Dry Runs. It cascaded through the boulders and 'washed' into the creek.
We call this event:  A Gully Washer
The heavy rain sweeps out the dry runs of old leaves and debris, also cleansing the creek beds.
I can't wait to return and discover the creek's new appearance once the water recedes. Observing the valley's subtle transformations over the past 28 years has been remarkable and it feels like Mother Nature puts on a show just for me.
[not one other human aside from myself explores this region]
I presume the township will also have considerable work, given the damage the rain caused to our gravel roads.
Welcome to the start of a new week.
Sunday
The early bird gets the sunrise as the days grow longer. The colors are so amazing in the sky as they change so quickly.
In truth, this past week has felt more like mid March or the beginning of April than the last week of February. A year ago we were recovering from a major ice/snowstorm. This year? It is warm and pleasant.
In the morning I need coveralls to do chores. By midday, I can work outside in a sweatshirt.
I started this job:
Believe me, it will be a long long job to do. But since I can't plant a garden yet, raking, picking up sticks and stones will be a good job for me. It is good mindless work that can be done while listening to the birds and the forest noises.
I took a couple of breaks to go out and search for color in the woods. It is hard this time of the year as everything seems to be dull and lifeless.
Except when you look for Lichen and mosses. Then things get colorful.
During our morning walk Charlie and I found snow and ice on the mosses!
...and by a little after lunch time....
The Lichen was quite beautiful. But one has to pick up sticks or crouch down on a look to find the colors.
On a stick:
Lichen and moss on a log. It was so colorful!
Late Sunday afternoon, I took time to just sit on the porch with Charlie and enjoy the warm sunshine.
Charlie enjoyed it immensely.
It seems as though the ducks are starting to try and behave themselves.
Hmmm. There is one in every crowd.
Spring Surprises
Symplocarpus foetidus
aka Skunk Cabbage!
I had never heard of Skunk Cabbage until I moved to this area. I'm sure they can be found in forests near damp places around the state. Now I search for them every year to see how early the present themselves.
The earliest I've found them has been March 18th. The latest I found them just coming up was around April 15th.
The Common Powderhorn Lichen seemed revived with the moisture from the rain and melting snow.
Everything is mostly brownish and muddy right now so the lichen and moss are the colorful items in the woods.
I just love the name of this. Snakeskin Liverwort. It looks like dragon skin but grows mixed in with mosses. It is hard to spot too.
And then there was another surprise in my mailbox. I opened the box and found a mass of bubble wrap and I thought that as pretty funny. Perhaps someone thought I needed more for a suit of armor.
I unwrapped the bubble wrap and found a small figure that came with a card describing it.
Into the Woods
with BIG FOOT
Keep calm, stay wild
and squatch on.
Get lost in the woods
and have some fun!
Enjoy your journey,
one step at a time.
Believe in yourself,
everything will be fine.
I have a new pal to journey with. I showed it to hubby who just shook his head and laughed when I explained it.
Then I told him I was going 'Squatching'.
I think that is a perfect made up word for what I love to do, explore the forest.
