One of the big guys gave a regular country wave as I started to go by. Now, by nature, I'm not the sort of person who just stops and talks to strangers. But.
I'd been having trouble getting any recommendations for people that cut down trees. There are so many services that have sprung up in the past few years, it makes your head spin. I've called and had no luck. I've had others search for me with no luck.
So I stopped. I figured, no time like the now.
I'm little, this guy was HUGE as in very tall and very imposing. However, he smiled and walked towards me.
I stuck out my hand to meet his big meaty paw and said:
"Hi, I see you are dealing with Linda's trees. I was curious if I could ask you to stop by my place and look at two trees I have that need some work so they don't fall down on my pole shed."
"Oh sure we can! We have to finish up this job and do another job over at the church," he pointed across the ridge. "But we can come down and take a look at what you need this afternoon. I'm Don Stussy, and he pointed to another fella and that's my brother. We do trees."
I looked over and saw the Stussy Tree Service truck with a boom on it. Perfect. These guys were local and have been around for at least 30 years.
"We did Linda's fencing back a while ago too." He offered.
"I recall that! You did a great job."
I gave him directions to my house and then waited for them to show up.
The guys showed up later and walked around the two locust trees I've wanted trimmed or cut down for years.
One of them walked around one of the trees and said, "Well dang look here, you can almost see through this tree." He pointed out where holes were in the upper trunk.
"Ma'am, these will come down, don't know why they haven't. I see what you mean, be a shame to ruin your nice pole shed."
The guys walked around and sized things up and we chatted.
"We'll be here next week after we get the church done," Don said. The others nodded. "We'll cut them down and you can use what we leave as posts. $800 bucks a tree, how's that sound?"

Congrats! You were in the right place at the right time to find them!
ReplyDeleteI was!
DeleteLD....I had a tree taken down an it was great that those doing the work were so polite and communicated so well. I am glad they could help you out and nothing falls on that pole barn.
ReplyDeleteWord of mouth is the best form of Marketing. Nice that you connected with these guys. Tree removal is not for the faint of heart. Trees have a mind of their own. Hope all goes as planned. It won't be long and you will enjoy a clear view of the sky!
ReplyDeleteYes, I hope it all goes well also. I would rather the trees not fall on the shed and cause quite a bit of damage.
DeleteYAY! Glad you took the step to stop and ask them. They sound perfect. We had a similar experience many years ago. A truck was driving slowly in our neighborhood and my husband went out to ask them what they were doing. It was a dad (in a wheelchair) and two sons and they cut trees. They were looking for the best way to cut some trees for another property. He asked them for a quote to take down some elm trees we had with disease and they gave us a quote that was the only affordable quote we ever received. And came back in two days, cut down the trees, ground the stumps and cut and took the wood. Thank goodness he want and talked to them. (and he is not a talker).
ReplyDeleteI am normally a sort of shy person in situations like this, but there is no harm in asking.
DeletePerfect. Very, very cool. Glad you went up to them!
ReplyDeleteI know that's how Rich used to do things. He always went by word of mouth to find people for work.
DeleteAbsolutely no grass is growing under your feet! Lori
ReplyDeleteI hope a few dead trees are left behind. They are critical home and larder for birds and insects. Fungi, too. This obsessive cleaning up by humans is highly detrimental to wildlife.
ReplyDeleteIf you walk past those trees or anywhere on my land there are thousands of trees and many logs and dead standing trees.
DeleteThese 2 old trees would eventually fall on my pole shed causing lots of property damage.
Serendipity happened
ReplyDeleteIt does!
DeleteAh. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. You ventured. You gained. Rich would be so proud. Kris in Ohio
ReplyDeleteThe stars alined. You have accomplished so much. You may be little but you are mighty!
ReplyDeleteWhat impressed me the most was how polite the guys were. I had a guy here years ago and he said he didn't want the job but IF I paid him $5,000 he might just do it.
DeleteThese guys were concerned about my building and felt the trees needed work so I'd be safe.
What a difference.
Nothing ventured. Nothing gained. You ventured. You gained. Rich would be so proud. Kris in Ohio
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteWhat a fortunate turn of events has come your way! But really, the credit goes to you—because you reached out to meet it.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations... now everything will work out.
Sending you my best wishes.
Hug from Viola
You've gotten really good at the "I know guys" method of accomplishments! Whew! Yes, a see-through tree should probably come down under controlled deconstruction. Trees taken down in Kansas usually have squirrels running out of them. Linda in Kansas
ReplyDeleteI learned quite a bit over the years watching my husband do the very same thing.
DeleteThat's a great deal Val, still a lot of money but here the prices stop us in our tracks, unless one becomes really dangerous. We have had a couple of trees cut down and we just about choked at all the price quotes but better safe than sorry. Glad you are getting these done and you will get all that firewood and view.
ReplyDeleteThat is a lot less money than hiring other guys.
DeleteYes, the trees are dangerous and could severely damage the 100' X 50' pole shed. It would cost more than the price of the trees to fix or replace it.
The firewood won't be used unless someone wants to come and get it.
I don't burn wood.
But I do love bonfires.
That is great! Word of mouth is the best way, sometimes the old ways are the best.
