The De-construction project has been successful. I have one more project that needs to be done this fall and then I am finished with project work for at least a year.
I'm pretty much worn out from all that I've gotten done the past 6 months.
This is the part of the ugliness I looked at for so many years. We do have a beautiful place in this hollow. Really, we do!
I, of course nagged my husband for years to get the place cleaned up. However, he was never well enough to tackle this overwhelming job.
I hired Patrick from Midwest Excavating to get the job done. This is a shot from my 'security camera' that I captured when Patrick was working. You can see the proximity of the mess to my back door.
I had to look at that mess for 14 years. You've seen this shot before.
The view from my back door became this:
Now 3 weeks later? The grass has filled in around the concrete pad and it looks so much different. Another shot from the top of the machine shed.
I put items in the gravel there for two reasons. The ground under parts of it were still a bit soft and I don't want UPS or any other heavy vehicle leaving ruts. I also need to go over the gravel area a few more times with a magnet to pick up any nails or chunks of metal.
I worked on revamping the east side garden yesterday. I'm making a mess, but I am moving some of the bulbs that are next to the house to another spot.
This summer:
After two days of cleaning up the weeds and the dead stuff:
I pulled out all the border rocks and had to dig out two trees that wanted to grow next to the foundation. I dug out the grasses and cleaned out the flowers. I normally leave all it winter for insects and birds. This year it really needed a clean up. I didn't want to wait for Spring.
I transplanted 20 or so tulip bulbs to another area as they were getting so crowded. I moved 2 Blazing Star bulbs out away from the house. The birds love the seeds from that plant.
I took out Iris plants by the score and still have more to move around. In 10 years they have multiplied like crazy so I'm going to find some a new home. I also trimmed back the spreading phlox and replanted [hopefully] them by an area that is too difficult to mow.
The flowers around the porch are still going like crazy. Zinnias, Cosmos, Borage that has re-grown and re-flowered, and the Nasturtium flowers...wow.
I should just plant those flowers. They are so much fun. They have tried to take over the porch but I cut them and the morning glories back. They are now shining along with the marigolds in this fall weather in yellows and oranges. They are still attracting bees and showing off along with the orange cosmos which are very bold and beautiful too.
By late afternoon, the dogs and I decided to go out to the 'camp' and hang out in the hammock. As the afternoon cooled off, both dogs piled on me and we kept cozy enough to take a nap together.
It looks like a day of rest and relaxation for us.

Gosh, what a difference!! Your outdoors looks spectacular!!! I think hiring Patrick was a terrific idea. It looks like he did a great job. And the concrete pad looks even better now that the grass is growing around it.
ReplyDeleteThat is a lot of work digging up all the flowers, shrubs and bulbs. And then the replanting. You go girl!
I'm glad you and the supervisors can relax today.
Thank you!
DeleteWhat a tremendous improvement! Congrats! You deserved that afternoon off with the dogs in the hammock!
ReplyDeleteThat hammock and section of woods are so peaceful!
DeleteWhat a difference a demolition makes! You have really changed the look of your property. I would be very proud of myself.
ReplyDeleteYes, I never imagined it would look so nice after so many years of looking at a wreck.
DeleteYour hard work has paid off! The yard looks so much better. I have been reading that orange cosmos have a lot of medicinal benefits. I may have to order some seeds.
ReplyDeleteHammock time with dogs- perfect way to relax!
The orange cosmos seeds are so easy to collect, each year I get about a pint of them and then plant large areas. They outgrow the weeds and are lovely to look at.

ReplyDeleteYours are probably cosmos sulphereus
Yes! I knew that!
DeleteBoy! things sure have changed on your property since I discovered your blog! You have really accomplished a lot and it looks terrific. Especially love the look of the garden near the porch. By the way....you and Sandra have an open invitation to come for a visit....anytime! Lori
ReplyDeleteThanks. I'm replanning my garden for next year, but the stuff on the porch will stay somewhat the same!
DeleteYou never stop! 👏
ReplyDeleteMy husband used to call me the Energizer Bunny.
DeleteYour after pics look like an entirely different property! Whew! You've accomplished a LOT! It's okay to rest too. I've had squirrels "relocate" bulbs for me in the past. Maybe you could hire some to do that transferring stuff. Bet your clean-up has increased the value of the property too, but don't tell the tax man. Linda in Kansas
ReplyDeleteThey do look different!
DeleteThe squirrels don't visit the yard much any more since the dogs love to chase them and the Hickory Tree died.
The clean up shouldn't change the taxes as I just took away a building with no value. I hope.
Wow! I have to say it again. Val, you are amazing!!! I'm so impressed with all you've gotten done. That's a heck of a lot of work.
ReplyDeleteI'm just terribly motivated.
DeleteYou have made huge progress with this cleanup.
ReplyDeleteThanks, at one point I will sell this place I imagine and it will improve the selling value.
DeleteLove your flowering gardens!! I sure wish Liatris would grow better here...they did so well at my old place. I had them growing everywhere. Tall and short varieties, both purple and white. They are struggling in my butterfly garden.
ReplyDeleteYour place was beautiful, even with the building/pile. All rural places have junk piles. Some are just more hidden than others. Now that you are clearing things up/out it your place looks even more amazing. Job well done! You sure know how to work hard, play hard and rest well.
I can't want to see your creative studio/patio on that slab!!
Thanks. I think I might get some real patio furniture and some sort of shade thingy to put up in that spot in the summer. Also, it could be nice to have one of those campfire wood pit thing so guests didn't have to walk to the forest for campfires.
DeleteI'd love to have a real little building too. But I have to think about the cost.
I know you are so happy to have that area all cleaned up. It looks great. Your supervisors are just too cute riding on the 4 wheeler. RHill, TX
ReplyDeleteHoly cupcakes, Batgirl. You done great. I mean, wow wow. Lots done and I love that. And the two helpers are the cutest. Hope you had a wonderful rest day to take that beat.
