Yipee! I finally got around to these wonderful space 'cadets' from Aurora! Since the theme for the gifts were about spring, I had to use the gift packet of Zinnias along with another seed packet for a background.
Just behind Bugsy and Charlene are Lego flowers from the Botanical Collection.
Flowers the universal language of love....
When I saw these two I knew immediately that they would fall for each other. After all, it is my social statement for these times. We don't have to look alike to like each other!
The cold and rain has descended on us Sunday with icy conditions overnight and then 45 degrees and sunny on Monday.
While doing medications for hubby, I had to pull out some long cotton wads from a script bottle I opened.
I walked over to where Rich was having coffee and grabbed the Green Lego Dragon off the shelf and proclaimed that the Dragon Will Breath Fire!
I dropped the cotton wads next to the Dragon.
Rich shook his head and said, "Your cr..aa... your not right.. and ... they said I was crazy!" He patted my hand and gave me that look that said he was so sorry for me.
I went back to sorting and replied. "Just wait! I'll make him breath fireballs with that cotton!"
[No, I did not light the cotton on fire!]
Rich gave me the roll of the eyes and then stated: "The guys with the white coats, um...they will get straight coats for you...and take you away." He chuckled. He is always amused by the way my mind works.
When I get into a 'creative' mood with an idea in mind, I can close off the world around me. He went to take a nap. The rain came down in sheets outside and I proceeded to get into the 'zone'.
Creating a project requires that I have everything else in the area cleaned up and prepped. So I vacuumed, dusted, and cleaned the downstairs so I wouldn't have any further distractions.
My little table is in a spot that also has the oxygen concentrator so I have to step around that and deal with the oxygen tubing. However... it is how things are in our tiny house, so I deal with it.
Just so you know. I don't have a 'studio' for doing my photography. My creations are done at our table...
Dragon drinking water in the forest....amazing what a laptop can do...and what some saran wrap can create for an illusion!

or done in the living room....
This is what the set up looked like. Cotton wadding from medicine bottles stuck with sticky tack to the dragon and castle.
I put a Ulanzi Light behind the drawbridge door and pointed it with a snout at the cotton wadding.
I turned off the overhead light and used another small Ulanzi light to light up the dragon's face.
Both photos were shot with a Lensbaby Sweet 50 with an f stop of 4.
The cotton 'fire' was enhanced slightly with dynamic contrast in DxO labs.
How many times did I do this before getting a successful shot?
About 20!
I learned about using cotton balls while pursuing Lego photos in both Flickr, Instagram, and FB Lego photos.
With the news that is overwhelming and concerning each day, I do try to find something...anything to take my mind off from it and also ease my whirling brain from both the news and the difficulty of being a Caregiver.
I was stuck inside [during that last cold spell] so I decided to do something interesting 3D printed character I acquired. It has no face, no name, but has the number 13 on its chest. It is a color I would never have chosen, but there it is.
Pink.
Pink must have a story behind her. She is a she, correct? She came with a faithful robot dog. Everyone needs a faithful sidekick, right? So I call them Pink and Pip. I don't know why but just because I felt like it.
They live somewhere in the future I suppose in a warehouse.
She dreams of a beautiful place a dreamy place. The sort of place her handlers have talked about in the distant past. Beauty, flowers, tranquility.
Pink and Pip play fetch on their down time as Pink explains about this wonderful world she has never seen but has only heard about.
Pip rejoices with her master and plays fetch. They talk about dreams and possibilities. Why is it that their handlers are the only ones allowed to have dreams?
Robots don't really sleep. But they do have down time. One night...Pip pulls Pink out of her downtime. Pip squeaks and squawks.
This is no imaginary dream. She awakens to ...
to what? She is not programmed for this.
She goes outside to stare at the unbelievable...
What would happen next? I got stuck here for a long time. Actually for a few weeks. I didn't know what Pink should do.
And I left her in a desperate situation... like a cliff hanger on a mystery show...
But then I recalled my MiniBots from last year. I used them for a while and then gave them a storyline with Donder regarding the fact that they found Worm Holes and Rips in the Fabric of Time to travel through.
Maybe ... maybe Pink should find the MiniBots to help transport her away from this awful future world?
All of the above photos were set up indoors using a digital backgrounds. I made the backgrounds using Deep Dream Generator. I simply create a scene I can imagine [which takes many tries] and then either use my laptop for the background as I do for smaller things, or the old smart TV for the larger items.
It is like making a movie as you have to build 'a set' for the characters that work. It is like producing a Hollywood scene and is quite fun.
I have learned so much from a site called Toy Photographers. I often go back and read their articles. The tips and tricks are fun to experiment with and I think it helps my regular photography also.
Anyway. If my attention remains focused, I'll see if I can figure out Pink and Pip's next steps.
Who'd of thunk it? Using an old TV screen like this to make a photo like this....
👇
Some say that showing the 'secrets' of behind the scenes ruins the magic. In a sense it does, but it doesn't help others learn how to improve or try new techniques. In the past, I've used my laptop screen with pretty good success. However, I could only do little figures and not something like the above Watch Tower.
I tried some more fun shots before I dismantled the TV and put it back in storage. I don't have the room to leave it set up.
The one below is similar. I used an AI generated image of a desert and placed this minifigure and her horse on top of a piece of wrinkled paper bag I had. I used my cell phone flashlight to light her up from an angle and there it was....
A warrior traveling in the desert.
I had one more I tried. I set this Pegasus and the warrior on a mirror close to the TV so I could 'shoot' her flying on her steed.
I chose a photo of mine from the archives to use of clouds.
It came out pretty good, but I had to use a 'mist' brush to cover up the lines where the mirror met the screen. I did a slight radial blur of the background.
I need to try this again. Her face and the reflection of the light on her face are awkward. But the idea seems sound. Maybe next time I can put them on a tilt to imitate flying.
In portrait photography [which I have no care to do -- I tried it and failed], Digital Backgrounds are used. As they can be for Still Life Photography too.
The backgrounds can be digital printed items, or a smart TV like I used. I've even used scrapbook paper for backgrounds.
I've also used scraps of wood that I've painted and textured.
It worked well.
I really prefer to 'make' my own backdrops but I enjoy using all the tools I can. I do have a light box too. I'll probably shake the dust off from that and explore some created scenes with that.
I did this last year, it was quite fun to create a story without words.
The Interview
Since our temps dropped to very cold again. I may explore some of my old methods and try some new methods of photography.
I should really really ... gather some items and do some more still life shots.
I like making things up as I go along. I wing it when being creative. I don't plan, I do. Sometimes it is a fail, and sometimes it is a Win.
I decided to watch tutorials about 'making' terrain for sets and dioramas, most of the artists or creators drew up plans.
One fella who was using Junk he found around the house just 'winged' it.
That is my style. Take stuff and put it together to see what works and what doesn't work.
So, armed with old hair ties, a CPAP machine, tubing, garden mulch, cardboard, glue, spray paint, and paint...
I winged it....
I won't bore you with a ton of shots. I will offer 55 seconds of a series of photos with titles for what I did.
I discovered that I enjoyed working with cardboard more than the other materials. Cardboard is easy to cut into shapes that I want and when I am done with using it, I have no issue in recycling it.
Using the old CPAP machine was a great challenge. I cut apart the old and outdated hoses and enjoyed 'making' space junk out of them. Using mulch and chunks of wood as 'rocks' was fun also. I kept many of them loose so I could reuse them in different scenes. Of course I can toss the wood back into the flower beds too.
The process was a learning experience.
I even used a screen grab of a wrecked spaceship to add a digital background to a shot.
The Lego Droid sort of gets lost in this shot, but photos that don't turn out perfect are how we learn.
Original:
This one almost feels too busy. A focus just on the little droids would have worked much better. But by trying this over and over, I will eventually come up with something decent.
I do like the detail of the background though, it looks rusty and very much like a space junkyard!
I did put a little balloon light inside the container that was bright blue.
My first photo of the morning was taken on the porch. It ended up being my favorite. It isn't just a shot of toys. He just looks so SAD!
Battle Weary Droid
This was the cardboard design I made. I think I like this little 'scene' best right now for a background.
I may make more of them with certain themes or ideas in mind.
I cannot image trying to 'make' this scene out of Legos. Besides, I like to mess around with paints and try new things all of the time.
I did watch videos on making terrain for wargaming sets. They were pretty interesting. I mostly was interested in those videos that used things that most people would have on hand.
