I'm in the middle of the pack on the first photo. I got to meet some nice folks. Most are casual walkers and not hard core hikers. One lady made that comment as she noticed that I was wearing Yak Traks and apparently looked as if I were prepared for a long journey. [I just keep a backpack full of gear in case it is needed]. Most of the walk was paved, but the snowy trails were iced and slippery.
I nodded and said I did a lot of solo hiking, so always hiked with a backpack.
We went to a private preserve called Hugelheim. It was a nature preserve developed by a fellow named Paul E. Stry. The loose translation of the name means house on a hill in a forest.
The excitement happened back at the parking lot. I was in my car and looking up a place and waiting for the others to leave....when BAM.
I got hit by one of the other hiker's. Uffdah. The lady pictured in the blue coat in the first shot backed into me hard.
I jumped out and at first nothing looked damaged but scratches. My tail light was still intact but I could see a broken clip in the right rear quarter panel.
She was all crazy like and apologizing that her back up camera must have been dirty. I just looked at her. [In my mind I thought, WTF how can someone be that stupid not to check around when they back up!]
We exchanged phone numbers and I went over to the dealership and they suggested to go get an estimate as it looked like the rear quarter panel clips had been broken. I know these cars and that means the whole back section comes in one piece and they pop that off and put in a new one. Uffdah.
The scratches may be able to be buffed out.
I hung my head before going home. I wasn't angry I was just totally bummed. But life happens, I guess, and the last thing I want to do is make new friends and immediately be pissed off at them.
My drive home was quiet and now I know that I can take Charlie on the next hike. Dogs on leash are allowed. He'd enjoy it.
Let's top that off with waking up with a nagging tickle in the throat that feels suspiciously like a sore throat.
I'll attribute that to spending 9 hours in the courtroom with 80+ people on Tuesday.
I'm supposed to care for my friend's littles this week while she and hubby go to chemo treatments. I am hoping this is not a cold.
My conclusion is that group hiking is not really my thing, however I am learning about all these fantastic and free places to go to and explore afterwards on my own.
Those last 3 shots are the only ones I took on Saturday while walking with the group.
I could have really spent a lot of time where the group photo was done.
The best part is that I am learning all about these amazing area.
Update.
Fever of 101.8 tested negative for COVID.
This sucks.

Sounds like that lady walks better than she drives. Not a great intro. I hope you find interesting new walking trails though.
ReplyDeleteUffdah, indeed. People get too dependent on all those digital bells and whistles and forget the common sense precautions of driving. Glad you're learning about new and interesting places to hike though. And oh oh about those sniffles and fever. There's a lot of flu going around right now. I hope you didn't catch that.
ReplyDeleteI've never seen the word, Uffdah and I love it now that I see it. Very, very glad that she only damaged the car. I know it's a bummer though. I get that part too. Neat that you found some new places to hike. And that the pup gets to go along with is bonus time.
ReplyDeleteHere's to you feeling better. All the way back to 100 percent rockin' sockin' good.
Oh bummer. Your new Subie is hurt and your body is perturbed with city life exposures to cooties. (I've heard of Uffdah from a MiL who was full Swede up in ND.) Please get a flu test too. I had similar symptoms and but no fever and tests were negative. A lot of that crud is going around. Since covid started, I've still worn 3 layer masks to my apt. lobby mailbox, the grocery and drug store trying to avoid the cooties. A wet nose is for Charlie, not you. Get better! Linda in Kansas
ReplyDeleteHope you get the issue with the car resolved amicably. These things happen but as long as people are reasonable and accept their responsibility it can end well. I hope the hike was enjoyable other than the car park incident. All the very best for the holidays and more hiking in 2026. David
ReplyDeleteDarn so frustrating to have a new car and then to have damage. I hope your fever is just short lived and you feel better soon. Good that you are scouting out new places and that Charlie is allowed!
ReplyDeleteIsn't that awful? Both the crowd, the damage, and your cold or flu. I hope you get through it soo.
DeleteBlast it all. These things seem bound to happen when you have a newer car.
ReplyDeleteYikes! Merry Christmas! Sorry about your fever and scratchy throat....you sure were exposed to a lot of people at that courtroom. And your new car! Hopefully the woman will take care of whatever has to be done. Hope you feel better soon and have a happy Holliday. Lori
ReplyDeleteWell, that sucks! Do people really just use their cameras to back up and not look over their shoulder?!?!?
ReplyDeleteSorry about your car! Bummer. I had a large rock come out of nowhere recently on a country two lane road and broke my windshield. I know your frustration! RHill, TX
ReplyDeleteI sure hope the lady's insurance pays for your repairs. What an unfortunate way to end the day. Also hope you aren't down and out too long.
ReplyDeleteSending you Christmas blessings, It will probably be a tough one for you. (hugs)
