We arrived predawn at Brockway Mountain after driving through the night. We packed the 4 of us into my Cross trek Subaru. After all, the car is newer and a much safer vehicle than what my son owns. It also tends to sip gas.
I made rules of course. No eating in THE car. I'm a stickler for keeping the inside clean.
Gas prices? Anywhere from 3.98/gallon to 4.29/gallon.
That aside....
We drove all night to get to Brockway mountain to see the sun come up.
The wind on the 'mountain' was so wicked we retreated to the 'Nose' Lookout to watch the sunrise over Copper Harbor.
We found a couple from Colorado who were standing quietly waiting for the sunrise. The clouds moved in and the sun started to try to peak through.
The couple left, their opinion was that the sunrise would not be worth watcing. We waited patiently and moved around as the sky began to change.
We kept moving, and I went back to the 'scenic' lookout overlook and took this shot of Copper Harbor.
And as things kept changing my son kept waving me below the overlook to check out different views of this point.
The old adage. Patience.
Things will keep things changing and sometimes a person will be surprised and sometimes they will be disappointed.
We were NOT disappointed.
We explored the trails under the look out point and found more exotic views of Copper Harbor.
First Mission Accomplished.
I wanted to go back to another spot. I don't recall what it it is called, but it was the first spot we looked at for my son's impromptu April wedding.
I wanted to go back to this spot --taken in April with a wicked wind at predawn. [Cell phone shot in April]
This spot had so much potential with a bit more light. The rocks, the waves, the winds, the harsh environment was absolutely perfect. The tree on the right in the photo above was uprooted and gone.
However the stormy looking clouds and wicked winds still made for a great shot in B&W Infrared.
We explored this area thanks to a 5:30AM breakfast and strong coffee. This particular spot has so many interesting facets to it. Lichen, rocks, waves, winds, trees, plants, and clean toilets!
I think this is a very interesting part of the lake shore history. I will visit again.

Whirlwind, indeed. You caught a great sunrise in a super spot. Spreading the ashes like that is a meaningful gesture for you.
ReplyDeleteI did find the perfect spot for some of his ashes. It isn't even a teaspoon full. It is what I can carry in my necklace. Surprisingly, it was very emotional for me to do and I had to take some time just to sit there afterwards.
DeleteHowever, it means so much more than just dump/spreading them all at once. Now I have goals with him which brings it more meaning to our lives.
What a great whirlwind trip! RHill, TX
ReplyDeleteOh I am still recovering from no sleep from Friday to Saturday night, little sleep Sat night, up early and go go go all day Sunday, travel to my son's home and nap to drive home.
DeleteI'm taking a day off! LOL!
Your patience sure paid off with those wonderful sunrise shots! And I love the B&W photo of the stormy sky and windswept tree too. That "Gay Bar" sign made me laugh -- but somehow I don't think northern Michigan will become the next big gay mecca, LOL!
ReplyDeleteI'm home now from my own travels and back to daily blogging.
The town name is Gay and obviously named that many years before it had a different meaning.
DeleteIt housed a Milling company and the ruins are pretty cool that is mainly why we were there.
That's beautiful about taking Rich to the places he would have liked to explore. Very meaningful and touching. Thank you for sharing all the photos.
ReplyDeleteWow! What truly breathtaking views! How awesome to take a trip with your son.
ReplyDeleteYes, patience is the key. The natural world will always deliver its wonderful surprises, but on its schedule, not yours. Great that you made this trip and are all still speaking to each other!
ReplyDeleteWe seem to be able to tolerate each other pretty well. The wait for the sunrise could have been a dud, but we did just wait and were pleasantly surprised.
DeleteThat’s a lot of driving in one weekend but what a lot of amazing things you saw along the way.
ReplyDeleteIt was a lot but my son wanted to show me so much in one short weekend.
DeleteWhat trip! You sure don't mess round. Such a good idea to spread the ashes. Lori
ReplyDeleteWhat a great trip - and you are right - a whirlwind! And what great traveling companions! I am sure Rich will love to be a part of all these wonderful places. I can't wait to hear more.
ReplyDeleteI did find the most beautiful spot to tip out about 2 oz of his ashes. It was quite the emotional moment.
DeleteI really enjoyed that trip! Great fun.
ReplyDeleteThat was just the first hours of the journey! LOL, it was a wild and whirlwind trip.
