Monday I decided to do a Long Hike with Hannah. We'd hiked on Sunday with Charlie and I figured I'd give his little old legs a day off.
Hannah and I started down the trail and once we got through the meadow and into the forest trail, Hannah started to jump on any stump next to the trail.
Most of the trees are leafless but in the understory there were some remarkable colors that we found. It was raining lightly and these red maple leaves seemed to glow.
By the time we hit 4 miles, the sun came out.
By the time we got back to the car the clouds had moved in again.
Hannah and I had an incredibly fun long hike. I like to do those at least once a week.
Charlie stayed home to rest up his legs after Sunday's hike.
I do know that dogs have to be in good physical condition to do long hikes. They cannot be couch potatoes and just like us, they have to work up to distances. I'm pretty sure Hannah does at least double the distance than I do as she likes to run forward and then run back to me.
Her motor is always supercharged. In case you are wondering, I do take special care with her by monitoring her condition, her feet, her attitude and physical well being.
With only her along, it is a fast paced hike except for logs and stumps.
With Charlie involved also, it is a very laid back slow moving hike with many stops for examining everything around us.
This is the way....

Sounds great. But did you give Hannah a treat when she got to the correct stump? Or on every perching? I think she knows she's photogenic and poses for you. Linda in Kansas
ReplyDeleteFinding the correct stump on a 9 mile hike filled with stumps and logs might be a bit hard.
DeleteNearly every perch she made she was given a kibble for her efforts.
Mainly it keeps her attention on me at all times. This is one of the secrets of not losing a dog on 8,900 acres of woods.
Charlie is attentive to every stop I make and comes to see if there is a treat or a pat involved.
Having a young energetic dog again must make you smile! Both dogs are special in their own ways.
ReplyDeleteI love her energy and of course I love Charlie's chill attitude unless he meets people, then he is a bouncing dog.
DeleteDrummajor asked my question! I was wondering if she gets a treat for every pose! And I am happy to hear that she does. What a smart and adorable dogdaughter.
ReplyDeleteThey are beautiful dogs. But for some reason I thought they were much larger than they are.
ReplyDeleteLD...She is such a cute dog. Now only if she could get a treat every single time she wanted it. It would make her a happier dog.
ReplyDeleteOur rental learned very early what driveway was ours, and I can't figure out how since he is half deaf and blind, and he certainly doesn't have his nose to the ground at that point. He heads us up every time and sits at the garage door.
ReplyDeleteHe can probably smell the scent without putting his nose down, their ability to scent is like a thousand times stronger than ours.
DeleteHannah is a real go-getter!
ReplyDeleteI am going to try sitting on a stump and see if Miriam gives me treats!
ReplyDeleteGood one!
DeleteHannah is getting big. She is one smart cookie.
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine how many miles you watch each week! Lori
ReplyDeleteCharlie and Hannah are such adorable furry companions.
ReplyDeleteThese are great, Hannah and Charlie are adorable and I would certainly like some of Hanna’s energy.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful spot for a doggie photo shoot.
