Weather Report ---> Kinda Cool

Well. We are doing a Polar Vortex thing here in our area, again. Last week the weather was mild and rather comfortable.

We are now celebrating when the temps rise above 0 F. This morning, I didn't do chores until it was -10 F, and yes, I stayed quite comfortable outside. It may look goofy, but there is something nice about not being cold while out in the cold.

We are in a Cold Watch which will become a Extreme Cold Watch Thursday late through Saturday. My girls seem to have everything under control with their lovely thick winter coats.

More snow is supposed to happen tonight and Wednesday. -20 to -40 windchills are forecast to go along with that. Looks like a good time for a nice big pot of homemade soup.
Regular temps are predicted to look like this  👇

Brrrrr.
Thursday during the day looks decent enough that I might get out and do a bit of hiking with Charlie, but I doubt I'll be out and about Friday other than chores.

The shots below are from a bit of wandering around our forest today.

I just don't mess with extremely cold temps. I had enough of that when I was working night shifts at a place 30+ miles from home. Driving home in -19 temps in the middle of the night was concerning.
Things break in the cold.
Thank goodness, my old beater didn't mind cold weather.

The summer pasture wasn't full of tracks but the forest had many tracks. Deer had been browsing and making beds inside the woods.

Charlie didn't want to go with me for some reason, so I took Chippy.

Chippy rather enjoyed the adventure.

He always looks happy!

Well, there you go. There is the WI weather report for SW WI.

It's gonna be kinda cool.

  1. Aw, come on, let the equine come inside for some toasted marshmallows! That's too cold for me! (Yea, I understand about thicker fur.) Linda in Kansas

    1. My mules detest the machine shed and I've tried to put them in there. The pony doesn't mind being in the shed though.
Sometimes I feel for them, but they always seem just fine.

  2. Yesterday it was minus 17 here when I got up at 5:00am, minus 26 with the windchill. Just another winter’s day in southern Ontario! My friend, Jim, who is seventy-nine years old, went cross country skiing.

    1. Yes, I've gone hiking in those temps, but our 45mph gusts kept me inside.
      Good for him! Stay moving!

  3. We had a pretty nice walk in the cold yesterday. I got a “thing sticking out of the snow” picture too. I will most likely post it sometime, but perhaps not today. It has been quite a cold January, but I suspect that is true of every year here in Eastern Ontario.

    1. Well, it is better than frost bite. I was quite comfy, not fashionable, but I was nice and warm.

  5. We are having similar weather. Charlie didn't care to have cold tootsies!

    1. I figured out what made him run back to the porch, he heard a Red Tail hawk circling close by. When he was a little pup, I'd holler for him to come and grab him when I heard Hawks and Eagles circling above.
He feels those sounds are danger! So he was in no mood to be bird food.

How about a three sided shed so they can decide if they want to be out of the wind? If you don't want to go out, the extreme temperatures must impact them too. I can't imagine my horses being out in those temperatures without an option. The part they don't like, is probably being locked in.

    1. As you can see where they are sleeping, they are out of the wind. Part of being in a hollow and in the woods is that they can always avoid the winds.
When I lived in Kenosha there was no way my horses could get out of the wind so they had free access to a large shared area in the barn.

We have vastly different pastures and landscapes.
We had a shed like that 25 years ago and they never used it.

  7. Stay warm in the extreme cold. It is to be here on Thursday through the weekend. We have to go to the Infusion Center on Friday other than that we are staying inside. Way to cold for me.

  9. I had yard duty at -20 C. back in the day. You just have to dress for it. You look terrific!

  10. Awww, look at your cozy mules. Chippy is cute! Yes, we must dress for the weather. Animals/trees don't care what we look like. Enjoy our upcoming eyelash frosting weather. Safely, of course.

  11. I love the shots of the trees. They are my most fave in all of outside. Love the one looking up. What a great face mask/protection thing you've got going on. Well done, you.
